International Conducting Workshop and Festival 2011:
Ann Arbor led by Gustav Meier,

Don Schleicher
and Benjamin Loeb
March 18-21, 2011
Meier and Aubin
AnnouncementDecember 24, 2010
 Greetings!
I am proud to announce a special, short workshop presented by International Conducting Workshop and Festival.  Led by Gustav Meier, Don Schleicher and me, the workshop will concentrate on the techniques and principals laid out in Maestro Meier's seminal conducting text: "The Score, the Orchestra and the Conductor."
Rather than study complete works, as we have in past workshops, we will examine only excerpts from a wide variety of repertoire in order to solve the real problems.  To allow us to focus intensively, we will be working entirely with string sextet plus piano.
Applications will be accepted on a first applied/first accepted basis, and Ben Loeb and Larry RachleffI will only be accepting 35 participants.  After that, I will only be able to offer wait list and auditing spots.  Plus, if you pay the tuition early (by January 15) you will be able to take advantage of the reduced rate.  After that date, the tuition will increase.
When I receive your application, I will immediately send you an invoice.  Your spot will not be guaranteed until I receive full payment, and if the spots fill before you pay, I may have to cancel your spot.  I do expect this to be a very popular workshop, so while I can't guarantee a full refund if you have to cancel, I am fairly certain that I will have a large wait list who would like to take your spot.  I recommend that you apply early, since this will be quite popular and space is limited.

The workshop will be held in Ann Arbor, MI, US and will be held from March 18-21, 2011.

Gustav Meier teaching Ben Vickers Workshop Structure
As in the past we will offer conducting training and critique in a non-competitive, professional and supportive atmosphere and a great opportunity to focus oneself deeply in the difficult important problems from standard orchestral repertoire, which will include Stravinsky Petrushka, Tchaikovsky Symphony #5, Brahms Symphony #3, Mozart Overture to Abduction from the Seraglio, Debussy Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Beethoven Symphony #2, Adams Harmonielehre, Part 1, Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet.  Repertoire is subject to change.  All participants will be provided with a manageable excerpt list which we will concentrate on. We will not study complete works.

The schedule includes 13 Sessions including Sextet conducting, discussions and individual and group video review.

Conducting will be approximately evenly divided between all of the active participants, but there will be no fixed time of conducting. Instead, the focus will be on finding the problems in each excerpt and discovering and mastering the possible solutions.  Each participant will have ample opportunity to try out and observe the solutions.
Don Schleicher and Zachary Carrettin Levels of Participation
There will be 35 active participants who will conduct and up to 50 auditors.

Tuition for participation depends on the date tuition is paid.  If paid by January 15, the tuition is $900, if paid by February 15, the tuition is $1000, if paid after that, the tuition is $1100.  Tuition for auditors is $500.
Accommodations are not included in the tuition, but all lunches and a final dinner are.
Important Information
Housing is not included in the tuition but can be arranged for $50/night.  Rooms may be shared to reduce cost.

All sessions will be recorded for eventual online access and review.
Application Deadline:
Applications are accepted immediately and on a rolling deadline.  The earlier you apply and pay tuition, the less the tuition would be.  This email is going only to returning participants.  You will have two weeks before I make a public announcement, and I anticipate all of the slots will fill up shortly thereafter.

Thoughts from Previous Workshops
Thoughts from Previous Workshops

I highly recommend Benjamin Loeb's ICWF workshops. Out of all the workshops I attended, this one was the best! It was highly organized and provided ample podium time. I was mostly impressed with the quality of the learning in these workshops. The potential to improve tremendously at these workshops were encouraging for a any conductor at any point in his/her conducting  career. The teaching was first rate but also the atmosphere at these workshops were congenial and very professional. I met some wonderful colleagues and had a chance to work with some really good orchestras. It was a wonderful experience and well worth the effort and time!
- Rei Hotoda, ICWF 2002
Assistant Conductor, Dallas Symphony Orchestra

The format was ideal, with the consistent podium time and the additional off-the-podium instruction, and everything was incredibly well- organized. You've fostered a workshop environment that is truly not competitive, and the conductors are sup- portive of each other.
- Aram Demirjian, ICWF 2008

After doing three of your workshops I can honestly say that they are the most well run workshops I've ever participated in.  Even over the short span of a few days the Chihuahua workshop managed to establish the regular ICWF atmosphere of cooperation between contestants.  Somehow you always seem to take a group of conductors that under any other atmosphere would be competetive and turn them into a symbiotic group.  I look forward to doing several more of these workshops in the future!
- Matt Szymanski, ICWF Participant 2008, 2009 and 2010

The International Conducting Workshop & Festival is among the most inspiring and creative training programs for today's conductors. It is, by far, the most well-organized and professionally-run workshop that I have attended. Young conductors are given the oportunity to work with world's leading teachers. In short, I cannot imagine a better conducting workshop.

Thanks
This workshop is designed for conductors of all experiences levels, from the most experienced music directors who are looking for critical, yet positive and constructive feedback to conductors who are just beginning their studies.  Now in our tenth year, I know we have a great system in which to study conducting intensively.  This particular workshop has a unique design which is different from all previous workshops, but I am convinced it will give you an amazing opportunity to learn from our great faculty.
Sincerely,
