PACC YONKERS 89th ANNIVERSARY

On October 5, NYPALC President Isabelle Coelho-Marques and Board Members Fernando Santos and Tony Castro joined the celebration of the 89th anniversary of the Portuguese American Community Center.

NYPALC BOARD MEMBER CARLA PINTO SWORN IN TO PRACTICE LAW IN NEW YORK

On October 16, NYPALC Board Member Carla Pinto was officially sworn as an admitted attorney to practice law in the State of New York at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Brooklyn.

A graduate of Touro Law Center, Carla has been the 2nd Secretary on NYPALC’s Executive Board since 2018. Congratulations Carla!
ANIVEC/APIV IN NEW YORK

On October 29, NYPALC President Isabelle Coelho-Marques had the honor to meet with César Araújo, President of  ANIVEC/APIV  (Associação Nacional das Indústrias de Vestuário e Confecção), during his visit to New York.

The National Association of Clothing and Apparel Industries - ANIVEC / APIV - represents the Portuguese clothing and apparel industry with various institutions at national and international associating companies, manufacturers and distributors of the most diverse products.

NYPALC President joined the President of ANIVEC and Virginia Feitoza, Senior Trade Officer of AICEP Portugal Global, in visiting the showroom of the Portuguese fabric company Somelos in Manhattan.
NYPALC EDUCATION
FOREIGN AFFAIRS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (FAIT) FELLOWSHIP

The  U.S. Department of State  is seeking to attract top tech talent to the Foreign Service that reflects the  diversity  of the United States.
The Foreign Affairs Information Technology ( FAIT ) Fellowship provides undergraduate and graduate students pursuing IT careers with tuition assistance, mentorship, and professional development to launch their careers in the Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and students with financial need are encouraged to apply to this challenging and rewarding opportunity here. The deadline to apply is Friday, February 14, 2020.
CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (CLS)

The  Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program  is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. Languages include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Apply today here . PORTUGUESE LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS
Portugal’s Legislative Elections took place on October 6th, 2019.

Meet the two elected officials who will have the responsibility to represent the Communities living outside of Europe in the Portuguese Parliament.

LUSO AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER HAS A NEW ROOF!
We did it! After months of NYPALC led fundraising efforts, a new roof was installed on the Luso American Cultural Center of Brooklyn.

We thank all that joined NYPALC and the Luso American CC in this Community effort.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA PORTUGUESE CATHOLIC CHURCH FUNDRAISER

A NYPALC member organization, the Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Catholic Church is the only Portuguese church in New York State. It was dedicated by Auxiliary Bishops Reverend Anthony Mestice and Theodore McCarrick in May 4, 1980.

The church is currently in crucial need of a new heating and cooling system and, needs the help of the community's help to tackle this expensive project.

VOTE EARLY NEW YORK

For the first time in history, New Yorkers can vote early from Saturday, October 26th to Sunday, November 3rd. All registered voters in New York are eligible to cast their vote early or on Election Day on Tuesday, November 5th.

In January 2019, New York State began modernizing the election law, expanding voter access by enacting a flexible in-person “Early Voting” period, which takes effect statewide for the November 2019 general election and all primary, run-off primary, special, and general elections thereafter, so that all eligible New Yorkers have reasonable and convenient opportunities to participate in elections ( Chapter 6   of the 2019 Laws of New York).

SUMMER IN PORTUGAL 2019 PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS!
For three years now, NYPALC has enjoyed featuring photos of our New York Portuguese Community members connecting with their roots in Portugal during the Summer.
The winner of this year's contest is Steve Cruz (Yonkers) with a photo in Aveiro. Runner-ups are Monica Duarte (Port Chester) and Elsa Costa (Ossining).

NEW YORK PORTUGUESE HISTORY
VETERANS DAY: NEW YORK PORTUGUESE SERVE

In honor of Veterans Day, a day where we honor and salute men and women who have served our country in uniform, NYPALC recognizes Brigadier General of the US Marine Corps Americo Augusto Sardo , a New York Portuguese who served the United States of America with distinction.

Americo Augusto Sardo was born on March 4, 1930 in Monte, Murtosa, Portugal. He moved to Mount Pleasant, NY with his mother Laura when he was six years old.
His father, Americo Jose Sardo, had immigrated to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1922 from France. By the late 30's , Mr. Sardo Sr's residence was Westchester County, where in 1945, Sardo Sr. became one of the founding members of the Portuguese American Cultural Center of the Tarrytowns.
Americo Augusto graduated from Tarrytown High School as the valedictorian and went on to get his undergraduate degree from the prestigious Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He graduated from Princeton University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.

Americo entered the Marine Corps in February 19, 1954 and was in Vietnam until 1969. On August 9, 1974, Americo carried the Bible for the Swearing In Ceremony of Gerald R. Ford, as 38th President of the United States. Americo remained as Marine Aide to President Ford until June of 1975.

Brigadier General Sardo passed away on September 1, 1985, at 55 years old, in Ocean City, Maryland. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery (Section 8 Site 8792)

His hometown of Monte, Murtosa has a street in his honor - Rua Brigadeiro Americo Sardo.

NEW YORK PORTUGUESE SPOTLIGHT
KRISTINE ALMEIDA IN 'SEM FRONTEIRAS' PROGRAM

This Summer, NYPALC had the pleasure to collaborate with BOM DIA in their " Sem Fronteiras " program, where members of the Portuguese Diaspora were interviewed to show the reality of each migratory experience.

New York Portuguese Kristine Almeida, was the first to be featured in this program.

 ANTHONY GONCALVES ACCEPTED TO US AIR FORCE'S SPECIAL OPERATIONS PROGRAM

A graduate from Boston University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training (AT) Anthony Goncalves, a Goldens Bridge resident, has worked as a High School AT at Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, CT and also at Rye High School in Rye New York.

Anthony enlisted in the US Air Force and has been accepted to try out for Special Operations at Lackland AF Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Anthony is the son of Lewisboro, NY Councilman Tony Goncalves. The Goncalves family is originally from Xertelo, Cabril, Montalegre.
 JONATHAN DOS REIS ACCEPTED INTO ALBERT EINSTEN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

N ew Rochelle native Jonathan is a graduate of Manhattan College and consequently of Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Among Jonathan’s prior work experience has been Research Assistant at New York University Langone Medical Center, Associate Scientist at Pfizer and Research Associate at Regeneron.

An alumnus of the Escola Francisco Sa Carneiro, Jonathan was a guest speaker at NYPALC’s inaugurate New York State Portuguese American Youth Conference in 2015.
ALYSSA MCKEE WINS BEAUTY PAGEANTS

In October, Alyssa McKee won the 2019-2020 Royal International Miss New York Preteen & 2019-2020 Royal International Miss Cover Girl titles.

Ten year old Alyssa, is a 5th grade honors student and, also a competitive dancer for Dawn McMahon School of Dance.

Alyssa's maternal grandparents are originally from Carrapichana, Portugal.
ALDEA RESTAURANT AWARDED MICHELIN STAR

New York Portuguese Chef  George Mendes ’  Aldea Restaurant  was again awarded with a Michelin Star for 2020.

The IV Portuguese Diaspora's Investors Meeting will take place in Viseu, Portugal on 13-15 December 2019.

The event is organized jointly by the Secretaria de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas, through the Gabinete de Apoio ao Investidor da Diáspora, and the Intermunicipality of Viseu, Dão e Lafões.
