Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub:

$750 million in federal funds

The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub - which includes Delaware - was chosen as one of seven national hubs to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance clean hydrogen production.

This is a really big deal. Delaware is expected to receive hundreds of millions of federal dollars that will create thousands of good-paying union jobs.

Several companies and institutions in Delaware that have already led on hydrogen will play a key role in the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub.

What is the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2)?

  • A network of hydrogen fuel producers and consumers, along with transportation and storage facilities in Delaware, Southeastern Pennsylvania, and South Jersey.
  • All federally funded projects will be constructed with project labor agreements.
  • The project will provide close to $14 million for regional Workforce Development Boards that will serve as partners for community college training and pre-apprenticeships.
  • MACH2 was chosen as one of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs in the United States.

Why pursue hydrogen energy?

  • The Biden Administration is investing $7 billion to launch seven regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs to accelerate the commercial-scale deployment of low-cost, clean hydrogen.
  • Hydrogen is a valuable energy product that can be produced with zero or near-zero carbon emissions.
  • This will help the United States meet our energy and climate goals.

What will the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub do?

  • Generate clean power from renewable energy.
  • Create a new form of energy storage.
  • Decarbonize heavy industry and transportation.
  • Benefits for Delaware: It creates a new source of jobs at the Delaware City refinery and in Georgetown. It also means that cleaner fuel will be used in industrial plants, research facilities, and in trucks and buses throughout the state. This also creates more opportunities for Delaware companies and research organizations that are part of the hydrogen supply chain.

Where does funding come from?

  • President Biden's Investing in America agenda is funding this project across seven hubs.
  • The MACH2 project will receive up to $750 million.
  • The federal funding will be matched by more than $2 billion in private investment to finance the Mid-Atlantic hydrogen projects.
  • MACH2 anticipates creating 20,800 direct jobs—14,400 in construction jobs and 6,400 permanent jobs.

How does this impact me?

  • MACH2 will create thousands of good-paying union jobs in our area.
  • By advancing clean energy and fighting climate change, this initiative will help preserve Delaware's natural heritage for future generations, while being a solid economic engine for the region.
  • You can learn more by attending a U.S. Department of Energy community briefing on the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub on Wednesday, October 25.
