LEESVILLE, La. -- The Vernon Parish School Board recently recognized students from schools across Vernon Parish, Louisiana, for their statewide achievements during its meetings this month.

To be eligible for this student recognition, students must have placed sixth place or higher in any activity on the state level. For sports, teams were honored if they were semifinalists or better in the state.

Honorees included more than 350 students who excelled in competitions in sports, the arts, social studies, 4-H club, Beta Club, academics and more. Many of these awardees were military-connected youth from Fort Polk.

"It's always a good time when we have these many kids being recognized," said James Williams, VPSB superintendent. "The best parts of our meetings are when we can acknowledge student achievement and the hard work of the students, teachers, administrators and parents of the schools."

Fort Polk Garrison Commander Col. Jarrett A. Thomas II also expressed his excitement at the students' accomplishments.

"On behalf of the soldiers and family members and civilians on Fort Polk, we want to congratulate all the students on their achievements, which we know is due, in part, to the parents, teachers, and the district who provide and encourage opportunities for achievement for our students. So, thank you," Thomas said.

Fort Polk Progress Chairman Michael Reese thanked VPSB board members for taking time out of their meetings this month to celebrate the success of the students.

"We appreciate the board for recognizing these students for their talents and commitment to their academics and extracurricular activities," Reese said. "I am in awe of the number of honorees this year. It is truly a testament to the quality of the opportunities available in Vernon Parish schools, as well as the amazing teachers, coaches and staff encouraging our students to always strive for excellence."
