Teaching Teachers and Empowering Parents

2025 Fall Newsletter

From the President

The start of the school year is upon us, and schedules are busy! But don't miss our fall event, coming right up on September 13th at 10:00 am at Notre Dame University in Belmont. It’s a screening of Hopeville, a documentary on the importance of evidence-based reading instruction and how it was implemented in one community. A panel discussion will follow with information useful to educators, administrators, and parents. Registration closes this Sunday, September 7th, at midnight, so make sure to grab your seat now!  Details and registration link here.

In October, we plan to repeat last year’s Rock for Dyslexia event at the San Carlos library, where participants can paint a rock with words and images that celebrate the strengths of people with dyslexia. Rocks can then be photographed and entered in a contest sponsored by the Georgia Branch of IDA. Watch for details on our San Carlos event in the next few weeks. You can also participate independently; see how-to details posted by our Georgia branch partners.

Finally, if you are one of the many people who have been waiting for the release of a Spanish version of our Experience Dyslexia™ simulation, we are happy to announce that it will be out this fall.  If you would like to be notified when it becomes available, please complete this form.

Join us for a screening of Hopeville–How to Win the Reading Wars, a powerful documentary by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Harvey Hubbell V. The film follows one town’s fight to transform how children learn to read and explores the national movement for literacy reform that it sparked. Through real stories of students, educators, and families, Hopeville shines a light on what’s at stake when reading instruction fails—and what’s possible when communities come together to demand change.  A post-screening panel discussion, moderated by Angie Kastner, reading specialist, will feature Doug Killin, head of Compass High School/former director of Charles Armstrong Middle School; Dorothy Glusker, English learner specialist/reading specialist/SEAL coach; Tiffany Kendall Obayashi, resource teacher/previous assistant principal; Lisa Krackov, reading specialist/classroom teacher.

$I5/member; $20/non-member; $10/student
