Governor Waives Live CE Requirement
Governor Eric Holcomb has temporarily suspended the requirement for live continuing education for licensed professionals in Indiana. The requirements of IC 24-14-3-8 and IC 25-13-2-6 have been waived to allow for a dentist or dental hygienist to utilize distance learning to complete their continuing education requirements for licensure renewal. This Executive Order is temporary but will remain in effect for the duration of the pandemic.
Leadership Committee Accepting Applications
The IDA Leadership Committee invites applications or nominations for a number of IDA and ADA leadership opportunities that will become available in upcoming months.

Majority of Dentists Have Received Vaccine
A January 2021 survey of Indiana dentists shows that the vast majority have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. According to the results:

  • 83.7% of dentists have received, or are scheduled to receive, the first dose.
  • 63.2% of dentists have received, or are scheduled to receive, the second dose.
  • 19.6% of dentists report that all of their eligible staff have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
  • 67.5% of dentists report that some of their eligible staff have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
  • 6.8% of dentists report that none of their eligible staff have received a dose of the vaccine.

Reasons for dentists and staff not receiving the vaccine include a current or planned pregnancy, inability to take the vaccine because of a medical condition, difficulty securing appointment times, recent COVID infection, wariness of taking a new and rushed vaccine, and doubts about the necessity for a COVID vaccine.
IDA Supported Legislation Passes House, Moves to Senate
On February 8, HB 1079 passed out of the Indiana House by a vote of 96-2. It is now awaiting a committee hearing with the Senate Health & Provider Services Committee.

  • It modernizes the definition of dentistry in Indiana statute
  • It provides for dentists to be able to administer vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine
  • It requires insurance companies paying dentists with virtual credit cards to offer an alternate claims payment method.

If you know any of the following members of the Senate Health & Provider Services Committee, please contact them and encourage them to support this legislation.

INSPECT Reports Required Before Prescribing Narcotics
A new mandate requiring electronic prescribing for narcotics went into effect on January 1, 2021.

According to INSPECT Director Kara Slusser, the requirement is still generating a number of questions from providers. She clarified the following:

  • An INSPECT report has to be run only before prescribing an opioid or benzodiazepine, not prescriptions such as antibiotics.
  • INSPECT maintains a trail of user activity, so the system does not require you to maintain INSPECT reports. However, your professional liability carrier may recommend documenting that you ran an INSPECT report in your patient charting.
  • INSPECT will check a dentist’s reporting compliance when investigating an individual for pill seeking.
  • There are training guides available for the NarxCare scores listed on the INSPECT reports. After logging into the INSPECT database, navigate to Menu>Training to access all AWARxE and NarxCare training guides.
