Apply for Provider Relief Fund by October 26
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) opened Phase 4 of the Provider Relief Fund, with a deadline of Tuesday, October 26. Eligible dental providers can apply to receive funds from the $17 billion set aside for providers who can document revenue loss and expenses between July 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, as a result of the pandemic. These payments, not loans, will reimburse smaller providers — “who tend to operate on thin margins and often serve vulnerable or isolated communities — for their lost revenues and COVID-19 expenses at a higher percentage compared to larger providers.” The phase also includes bonus payments for providers who serve Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and/or Medicare patients to ensure equity.
Dentists are eligible under this criterion: “Must be a dental service provider who has either directly billed, or owns (on the application date) an included subsidiary that has directly billed, health insurance companies or patients for oral health care-related services during the period of January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020."
The HRSA Website provides more details, including the Provider Relief Fund Application and Attestation Portal HRSA Exit Disclaimer.

The application will close on October 26, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Applications must undergo a number of validation checks before financial information is submitted, so providers are encouraged to begin their application as soon as possible to ensure they are able to meet the deadline.

November Center for Excellence Focuses on Sleep Medicine
Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) is the fastest growing field in dentistry. With the adoption of the ADA Policy on the role of dentists in the treatment of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, every dentist must now screen all patients for the possibility of a sleep disorder.

On November 12, the November Center for Excellence will discuss protocols for treating obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy, creating a referral-based practice, consequences of sleep disorders, adjunct therapy and intake examination with physician communication.

In addition, join Dr. Ken Berley and Patty Berley on Saturday, November 13, 2021 for the Dental Sleep Medicine and Medical Insurance Billing Workshop to include a one-on-one workshop time featuring hands-on rotations with bites, temporaries, repositioners, appliance selection and adjustment, and medical insurance billing.

Limited workshop space is available.

Delta Dental Offers New Special Needs Enhanced Benefits
A dental visit can be overwhelming to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and the special services needed are usually not covered by dental insurance. Delta Dental in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana is seeking to change that with a new benefit starting January 1. Children and adults with special health care needs will have access to enhanced benefits through the Delta Dental network if their employer opts in on the benefit.

Benefits include:

  • Additional visits to the dentist’s office and/or consultations that can be helpful prior to the first treatment to help patients learn what to expect and what is needed for a successful dental appointment.
  • Up to four total dental cleanings in a benefit year.
  • The use of silver diamine fluoride that can be applied to cavities for patients who can’t tolerate the use of dental instruments.
  • Treatment delivery modifications for dental staff to provide oral health care for patients with sensory sensitivities, behavioral challenges, severe anxiety or other barriers to treatment.
