IDAA Recovery Story

Attitude of Gratitude – Richard P.

Hi, I'm Richard Pearson, I'm 78 years old, my sobriety date is 8/11/1987. I have been a member of IDAA since 1996.

I started recovery having grave emotional and mental problems, there were no licensing issues.

My childhood was very confusing to me, there was a passive alcoholic father and a passive aggressive controlling mother. At the age of eight, my mother informed me I was a mistake, that statement haunted me for 34 years. At the age of 20 I fell in love with Mary, the girl of my dreams. We made plans to marry after I graduated from Optometry school. Mary jilted me after just 10 days away at school and she informed me she had found someone better. With a broken heart I promised myself no one would ever hurt me like that again and I closed my feelings.

Scholarship recipients, like newcomers at a 12-step meeting, are the most important people attending each IDAA Annual Meeting. Thanks to the generous contributions of our members, we can continue the tradition of offering full and partial scholarships for members and sometimes their families.

Scholarships are offered for registration fees, CE’s, and lodging only and are available for both individuals and their families.

Forever Sober

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Burns Brady. Dr. Brady played a significant role in the expansion of IDAA membership, particularly during Gordi H.'s tenure as Executive Director and during his time serving on the IDAA Board. Despite not being able to attend the Annual Conference in recent years, Dr. Brady remained connected with numerous members.

IDAA is grateful for Dr. Brady's years of service and tireless efforts to inspire and support others on their recovery journeys.

What is IDAA?

IDAA is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering healthcare professionals and their families in their journey to recovery from substance abuse and addictive behaviors. We connect individuals struggling or in recovery from addiction and loved ones to supportive communities, both online and in person. Here, they can find inspiration, strength, and hope as they hear personal stories of recovery from addiction as told by fellow healthcare professionals. To further our mission, we gather annually for a conference, delving into the educational depths of addiction as a disease and providing invaluable spiritual support to one another.
