Implementing IDDSI: Updates

In our last e-bite on June 17, we showcased the Kempen Pilot Project as one of the first IDDSI implementation initiatives. We are pleased to announce that the full review article of this project can now be accessed through our website. Click here to access the article.

Translation of IDDSI Framework: Update

Need a translation to help your implementation? In order to implement the IDDSI framework, we need to ensure people can read and understand it.  In your setting, you may be working with colleagues whose first language is not the same as yours.  Using a translated version of the IDDSI documents can help your implementation process.

We are working towards having the IDDSI Framework translated into as many languages as possible to help you implement the IDDSI framework into your setting.  We cannot do this without the assistance of volunteers like you. Our process includes having volunteers translate the documents (Descriptors and Testing Methods) which are then posted for peer review for 3 months.

Final documents are then posted on our website for you to download and use in your settings.

The following translated IDDSI Framework documents (Descriptors manual and Testing Method manual) are currently posted and are completed or undergoing peer review. Take a moment and see which languages you may be able to make use of or provide peer review comments in.

Documents that have been translated and are completed or up for peer review are currently on our website, and include:

  • French (France)
  • French (Canadian)
  • Norwegian (Bokmål)
  • Italian
  • Swahili
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Chinese

Translations are underway for the following languages. See the list here, under the "Coming Soon" tab.

  • Afrikaans
  • Arabic
  • Dutch
  • Farsi
  • Japanese
  • Russian
  • Swedish
  • Thai
  • Turkish

Aside from the current translations, at the moment, we have the IDDSI levels translated in 10 different languages, thanks to volunteers like you.   See them under the tab, "Levels Only" here.  (For the other translations of the levels, please see the "Framework" tab on the same page.)

Can you help? Consider reviewing a translated document and providing comments or email us if you are interested in translating documents.  Click here to read instructions on how you can help.

Implementation Ideas?
Wondering what practical steps you can take to work towards IDDSI implementation?

  • Order a test meal from the kitchen and work out what IDDSI levels the foods equate to. Share this information with the kitchen and your colleagues.
  • Health professionals could ask for a tour of the kitchen and offer kitchen staff a tour of the wards to help increase appreciation of each other’s work spaces and work flow.

Support for IDDSI

IDDSI has been fortunate to have the help and support of Chef Tibor Paller (Tibor’s Kitchen, Melbourne Australia) to prepare and plate some beautiful meals.  Photos of Tibor’s meals will be used on upcoming IDDSI posters and patient handouts.

Tibor uses his exceptional skills and passion to create beautiful, tasty and safe texture modified food for people in healthcare and aged care settings.  Tibor also runs training courses to help inspire chefs and cooks to prepare amazing food, that is delicious, looks beautiful and works within a budget. Please see a sneak peak of some of the delicious texture modified meals below.

Level 4 – Puree: Pureed Pizza – Creamy polenta base, topped with dollops of ricotta, pureed olives, pureed pimentos, pureed mushrooms and parmesan cheese (and it tasted as delicious as it looks!)

Level 5 – Minced & Moist – Pasta Primavera: Risoni pasta is just the right size for Level 5, together with sautéed and diced summer vegetables

Thank you, Tibor!
