Implementing IDDSI: Preparation and Adoption
|

In our last e-bite May 2017, we highlighted the Awareness phase of our implementation model. We are thrilled about the ever increasing level of awareness of the IDDSI framework and the interest from stakeholders around the world. Many report they are working to increase awareness while others are now looking to the actual process of implementing IDDSI into practice. Our next few editions of the IDDSI will spotlight on some of the projects underway around the world.

The first pilot project was one undertaken at Hospital zum Heiligen Geist in Kempen Germany in 2015.
The Neurology ward of this 250 bed hospital was selected as the pilot site for an IDDSI framework implementation project. There were no existing German Dysphagia Diet standards at that time so each hospital set their own terminology to meet their specific contexts.
The key processes which were found to be most successful insupporting implementation included:
- Local champions who utilized a “top down” and “bottom up” approach to engage all key stakeholders.
- Top down included CEO, administrators, medical staff and head chef of the kitchen service. This helped ensure organizational support at various levels.
- Bottom up approach engaged front line staff (nurses, allied health, kitchen staff) to promote collaboration and increased understanding amongst each area.
- Mapping out current processes and then intersecting these with IDDSI terminology
- Multiple means of communication to promote understanding:
- Documents all translated to German
- Education sessions to all levels of staff and administrators. Sessions were geared specifically to needs. For example – practical sessions on the IDDSI flow test for nursing staff.
- Increased visibility of IDDSI – posters on walls in key areas, IDDSI labels (colors, numbers, text) for meal trays and use on white boards in ward areas, IDDSI terminology use in medical charting.
- Formal review processes to help chart progress and successes. Evaluation results were shared with key stakeholders.
