2022 IDP Scholarship

2022 Indiana Dairy Producer of the Year

Mental Health Programs

Dairy Defined

Greetings!

I need to confess…December is often chaotic for me. Not that I am alone! Most people experience the same thing, especially mothers. Shopping, dinner planning and decorating is overwhelming. At the farm…machinery clean up, preparing barns and end of the year financial planning brings a cloud of urgency to the month. It almost seems as Christmas is just an added burden. There is no doubt, I need to improve my attitude!
The image of Christ’s birth in a quiet, peaceful barn should be seen as a precious gift to us. As dairy farmers, we have all experienced the late-night quietness of our barns. I am constantly amazed how peaceful a barn full of cows can be. Once again, our cows become our great teachers. If you feel overwhelmed by the business of December, take a moment to walk your barns at night or early morning. They will take you to that manager scene from long ago and your tasks will hopefully become less urgent!
Great news for your organization! We are welcoming two new bronze levels sponsors to the fold. Crystal Creek Natural, LLC and Seneca Dairy Systems, LLC. Crystal Creek is a family-owned livestock nutrition and animal health company that has been serving the farming community since 1997. Seneca Dairy Systems is a full-service dairy solutions provider. From barn design and consultation to manufacturing and installation of the equipment you put in it. Welcome, Crystal Creek and Seneca, we are excited to have you as IDP partners!
Finally, best holiday wishes from everyone at Indiana Dairy Producers! May 2022 bring you and your families many blessings!!!

Mark your calendars for the 2022 Regional Meetings
Regional Meetings will be returning in 2022! The first meeting will be held at Jasper, Indiana on February 8th followed by a meeting at Berne on February 9th. The final meeting will be at Plymouth on February 10th. Agenda will include presentations on “Introduction to Succession Planning”, “Beef on Dairy: From Concept to Your Bottom Line”, “Sustainability: What, Why, How and Opportunities for Your Dairy”, and finally “On Farm Processing: A New Approach.”
In addition, we will receive an update on consumption trends and how Covid has changed consumer buying habits. We are also looking forward to including trade show exhibitors at the meetings.

Timely topics, excellent presenters, trade show and friends...sounds like something all Indiana dairy producers would find beneficial. Keep an eye out for more information and be sure to register early. This program will surely provide you with practical information to take home to your dairies!

Mental Health Programs
ISDA / IRHA
The agriculture community knows stress better than most. Not only do we have the usual worries of managing a farm and business, but we also have the added concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic, making mental health a rising concern for our community. To support the mental health of farmers, farm families and agriculture workers, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has partnered with the Indiana Rural Heath Association (IRHA) and Purdue Extension to reduce mental health stigma and connect individuals engaged in agriculture-related occupations to existing stress assistance programs. This partnership is funded through a $500,000.00 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute for Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN) Program.
The IRHA will host 23 community mental health workshops across the state through their Healthy Minds, Healthy Lives program. This program is specifically designed for farmers, farm families and those in the agriculture community. Workshops will begin in February and run through July 2022. Each session will include Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) certification and cover basic mental health and stress management resources. Registration opens 30 days before each workshop and can be found here: https://www.indianaruralhealth.org/services/healthy-minds-healthy-lives-workshops/ .
In tandem, Purdue Extension will survey and analyze the mental health call center landscape and capacity in Indiana. They will then create and deploy a specialized training module for mental health call center workers supporting farmers, farm families and agribusinesses
Together ISDA, IRHA and Purdue Extension will highlight the importance of mental health care through broad promotions. This will include creating mental health promotional materials and visual reminders for the farming community that will be shared at events across Indiana, such as the Indiana State Fair.
As we continue to navigate the stressors of our world, ISDA is proud to partner with IRHA and Purdue Extension to increase awareness of existing mental health resources, build knowledge on farming and agricultural stressors and help Hoosiers reduce stigma and better-recognize mental health needs.
Dairy Defined: Tough Times Arrive in Fake-Food Land - NMPF

December 6, 2021 The hype couldn't last forever. No matter how many celebrity funders are brought on board or "next best thing" pitches are made to launch a product, eventually, over-the-top marketing comes back to bite, and that's what's been...
