Dairy Ambassador Program


Greetings!

As we are getting closer to the 2021 Indiana Dairy Forum, we would like to introduce you to our speakers that will be presenting on the first day of the Forum. As you will see, we have a tremendous program put together for you with local, national, and internationally known speakers. We will have another phenomenal Trade Show for you to visit. Be sure to visit the silent auction, which funds our scholarship program. There will be great food, drinks, and dairy treats for all to enjoy along with the wonderful fellowship opportunities with producers and industry folks. 

With the Forum in June this year, we are really looking to get our young folks involved by offering a reduced registration fee for all students, which includes college students. We are planning to provide a special event for them during the evening. We will be set up to meet the CDC and local guidelines – hoping we are completely free and open by June 22-23!

You will also receive the lowest prices if you register by the end of April, so do not procrastinate, get yourself and anyone else from your farm or business registered and make sure to get your room reserved now. I assure you that you will learn something new and have the opportunity to improve your farm/business.

2021 Indiana Dairy Forum Speakers
Keynote Session:
Vision into the Future


Michael Dykes, DVM
President and CEO
International Dairy Foods Association

Michael Dykes, D.V.M., a long-time government affairs strategist, agricultural policy expert, and veterinarian, became president and CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association in January 2017. In this role, he represents members that make more than 85 percent of the milk, cultured products, cheese, ice cream and frozen desserts produced and marketed in the United States. Since joining IDFA, Dykes has been a strong advocate for the importance of global competitiveness to the future of the U.S. dairy industry. He has made preserving trade partnerships with Mexico and improving Canadian market access for U.S. dairy exports in all future trade agreements a priority for IDFA. Prior to assuming his role at IDFA, Dykes served as vice president of government affairs for Monsanto, where he was responsible for developing and implementing a portfolio of U.S. government relations strategies and programs that included agricultural biotechnology policy. He led Monsanto's office in Washington, D.C., and served as the company's primary point of contact for elected officials, regulatory authorities, U.S. farm organizations, key industry participants, trade associations, international organizations and embassies. He directed the company's efforts in state and local government affairs, in addition to government affairs in Mexico and Canada. Dykes is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the National Academy of Practitioners. He has served on the Farmhouse Fraternity board for 3+ years. He is also a member of the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee (APAC) and has served on the USDA Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture (AC21).
Dykes grew up on a small dairy and tobacco farm in Kentucky. He earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University. He also attended the University of Kentucky where he received a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.

Kevin Ziemba
STgenetics East Region Manager
 
Kevin Ziemba is the East Region Manager for STgenetics, where he and his team provide genetic support and resources to dairy producers. Kevin also has a role assisting in the STgenetics Genetic Creation Program. Born and raised on a dairy, Kevin has spent his entire life in genetics. Kevin graduated from Cornell University where he earned a master’s degree in quantitative genetics. After college, Kevin managed Advanced Dairy Genetics for three years and then held a management role in Select Sires for 17 years, providing genetic and reproduction solutions to dairy producers. During this time, he also managed/partnered on a 3,000-cow dairy in Northern NY.
 
Kevin is a very active Cornell alumna, returning to Cornell to guest lecture the Dairy Genetics class each year and coach the Cornell dairy judging team. He is also active in the Northeast Dairy Challenge, where he mentors young dairy professionals as a judge.
 
Kevin resides in Durhamville, New York with his wife, Barb and son, Mason. Barb is a Genetic Services Specialist for STgenetics as well and Mason is an avid dairy enthusiast, having his own line of show cattle and staying active in dairy judging.

Lucas Lentsch
Chief Federation Officer-Dairy Management Inc.

Lucas Lentsch serves as chief federation officer for Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), which manages the national dairy checkoff on behalf of U.S. dairy farmers.
Building on a strong foundation of agriculture, business, public service and community outreach, Lentsch provides leadership and counsel as liaison between national and local checkoff organizations across the country to drive alignment, programming, consistent measurement and impact to achieve results and engage farmers directly in dairy’s research and promotion strategies. With a passion and expertise for bringing people together to cultivate change, he is also responsible for outreach and relations with farmers, other commodity groups and key influencers, and providing support for UDIA governance.
Prior to joining DMI, Lentsch held the role of CEO of Midwest Dairy, overseeing dairy farmer checkoff initiatives within a 10-state region. Before Midwest Dairy, Lucas spent five years with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, serving three years as the state secretary of agriculture, creating and supporting programs designed to serve and protect farmers, ranchers and agribusiness. Along with his family dairy farm and processing backgrounds, Lentsch is also a veteran.
Lentsch holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, and his bachelor’s in agriculture from South Dakota State University. He currently resides in Minnesota with his wife, Laura, and their family.

Jenni Browning CEO American Dairy Association - Indiana

Jenni Browning is the CEO for the American Dairy Association Indiana, which works on behalf of Indiana’s nearly 800 dairy farm families to build trust in dairy and increase dairy sales. Her training as a registered dietitian strongly influences her belief that dairy is one of nature’s most perfect foods and that eating well means choosing real, simple and wholesome foods. She is passionate about convening organizations to empower agricultural education and communication to the public and enjoys working with and for dairy farmers connecting people to where their food comes from. Browning is a Ball State University graduate who received BSU’s Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2018, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics of Outstanding Dietitian Award in 2020.

Jeff Schaner
General Manager - Energy Division for Summit Funding Group
Based out of Cincinnati, Ohio

In a business development career that has spanned more than twenty-five years, Jeff has a proven track record of meeting and exceeding his clients expectations, having provided in excess of a half-billion dollars in value creation thru problem-solving solutions. Jeff has been a senior sales and marketing executive for industry leading companies, including Comdisco and Information Leasing Corp., as well as publicly traded bank finance leaders PNC Equipment Finance and Everbank Commercial Capital. Well-recognized for his ability to effectively identify, develop, grow and sustain business relationships in multiple industries and platforms.
The past three years have been a journey focused on the renewable energy sector, including solar and renewable natural gas. This journey has resulted in a “common sense” understanding of how our countries dairies can capitalize on their readily available natural resources to provide financial stability for your family and business.

Dr. Jackie Boerman
Assistant Professor Animal Sciences
Purdue University


Jackie Boerman grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York and received a B.S. from Cornell University, a M.S. from the University of Illinois and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She spent the early part of her career working as a dairy specialist in the Midwest, experiences that now inform her work as an Assistant Professor of Animal Sciences at Purdue University. Her research focuses on determining how nutrition and management affect the health and productivity of dairy calves and cows. Boerman also supervises a Purdue Extension program, which disseminates information about the nutrition and management of dairy cattle through a series of podcast, publications and presentations. Through her research and extension work, Boerman is developing predictive models that allow dairy farmers to better understand how living conditions, diet and other factors impact the health and, ultimately, the productivity of their livestock.

Tabby Hurst




Tabby Hurst is from a farming family in southern IN who is committed to helping farmers better understand the interactions between health and management. Tabby Hurst received her BS and MS degree from the Animal Sciences department at Purdue University. During her MS degree her research focused on integrating data from a commercial farm to determine which factors impacted future growth, reproductive success, survivability and production. Tabby developed an interest in lung ultrasonography during her MS degree and was awarded a SARE grant to evaluate lung consolidation and its impact on growth in dairy and beef cattle.

  • Dairy Ambassador Applications Now Open! Are you a high school senior or full-time college student? Do you want to share your passion of dairy with the public? Know someone that fits these interests? Apply for the Dairy Ambassador Program! This 1-year program brings together 5 students from around the state to represent the industry for through various activities, including the Indy 500, Indiana State Fair, social media engagement, and more. Students are awarded $2500 in scholarships throughout their term. Learn more and apply online by April 15!

Practice speaking with consumers and telling your dairy story in a way that connects in person and online! Purpose
American Dairy Association Indiana Inc. will select five students ranging from high school seniors to college undergraduates to serve as Indiana Dairy Ambassadors. Students will be selected for their abilities to communicate with the general public about dairy farming, dairy nutrition, and modern agricultural practices. Students who are accepted into the program are expected to serve for one year as a Dairy Ambassador, completing monthly assignments requiring a time commitment of approximately 3 hours per month.

Selection
All interested students should fill out an application. Prior Dairy Ambassadors may reapply. Applications can be found on WinnersDrinkMilk.com or by emailing rieth@winnersdrinkmilk.com. Applications will be open from January 1 until April 15. Applicants will be notified in May, with terms of service for the five ambassadors beginning June 1, 2021 and running until June 1, 2022.
