Dear IEA Members & Friends:

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We see you out there doing great things and it makes us proud you share your time and talents with us.

As we wind down the calendar year, we are winding up for exciting events in 2025 including National Finals which will be here before we know it. New venues, new sponsors, new opportunities as well as many of our returning favorites. If you are not already following us on social media @rideiea on Facebook and/or Instagram - you are missing out! We are constantly sharing updates, stories, photos, and more as it is the easiest way to spread information quickly.

IEA Hires Equine Professional Lori Cramer

as Co-Administrator for Growing Dressage Program

IEA recently hired equine professional, Lori Cramer, to be the Dressage Co-Administrator for the IEA’s growing Dressage program. Cramer’s responsibilities will mirror that of co-administrator, Emily David, with a focus on program growth and finance. No stranger to the IEA draw-based competition format, Cramer previously served on the IEA Board of Directors in 2016 and 2017 and has a long history of working with various collegiate equestrian teams.

Cramer served as the Director of English Equestrian Studies at The University of Findlay from 2001-2004, where in her four-year stay, the team accomplished the title of Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) National Champions and earned two Reserve National Championships – finishing in the top five all four years. She had the opportunity to coach The Ohio State Hunt Seat team in 2004-2005 earning the title of reserve Zone 6 Team. During her time working with The Ohio State team, Cramer also had the opportunity to assist with the Autumn Rose Hunt Seat IEA Team.

From 2005-2015, Cramer served as the Director and Coach of the Miami University Equestrian program developing both the Hunt Seat and Dressage programs to achieve Regional, Zone and National top 10 rankings, while also leading the fundraising, design and building of an equestrian facility completing Phase 1 during her tenure. She has also served on the United State Equestrian Federation (USEF), United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA), IHSA and IEA Board of Directors in various roles and responsibilities.

In December 2015, Cramer was recognized with the USHJA President’s Distinguished Service Award and in 2016 with the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award. After her many years of coaching and program management, Cramer used her passion for leadership to work with Miami University Campus Services leading the team providing all non-academic services to students. She most recently served as a C-Suite member for a growing company where she drove strategic initiates while fostering the growth and empowerment of the team.

Returning my focus to a lifelong passion of working with horses and equestrians by working for an organization that supports the lifelong involvement of equestrian athletes is incredibly rewarding and a blessing,” says Cramer.

Originally from New Jersey, Cramer graduated from The University of Findlay with an undergraduate degree in Business and Equine Studies and a Master’s in Business Administration.

IEA Executive Director, Roxane Durant, stated “We are thrilled to have Lori to return to us in this new leadership role with a focus on Dressage. Lori’s understanding of not only the IEA program format, but of how to strategically manage budgets and growth systems has already proven helpful as we look at overall healthy growth for the organization.”

G4411.10 - A list of aids appropriate to each horse must be included on the horse description list distributed to coaches and posted. Changes to the horse description list must be written and posted in a public location. Riders are responsible for checking the horse description list and any posted changes prior to mounting. Riders who use anything other than the approved aids identified in the horse description list or posted changes will be eliminated.

G4411.5 - The need for crops and spurs may change throughout the day. Exhibitors should ask the show steward whenever there is a question as to what is listed in the horse description.

Paying attention to tack/aid changes throughout the show day is key to a successful class. Often times there is a "spur/crop change board" near the in-gate or where the steward is sitting. Many coaches/teams also set up a group chat or group text for their riders and parents on the day of the show to share things like horse descriptions, tack/aid changes, schedule updates and other important information quickly. But it is ultimately up to each RIDER to be sure they have the appropriate tack and aids for their mount at the time they enter the arena.

An Update from IEA Regarding the Use of Air Canister Vests Marketed for Equestrian Use

Recently, a question arose at an IEA show about the proper use of air canister vests. There are many brands on the market from which to choose. Riders (and coaches) who choose to show in air canister vests must carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for their air canister vest model.

In most cases, air canister vests come with a strap provided by the manufacturer that is designed to be anchored/tethered at the stirrup bars (a vest purchased secondhand may not come with a saddle strap, but the user should buy one to use the vest correctly). IEA wants to clarify that placing a saddle strap on the provided saddle is NOT a violation of IEA rules about adjusting tack. Attaching an air canister vest correctly to the provided saddle is, in fact, required by IEA rules.

Air canister vests should NOT be tethered to the saddle’s D-ring. Attaching an air canister vest improperly can result in it not deploying, or deploying late.

IEA Rulebook states in rule G4412.5:

The use of additional personal safety equipment and gear marketed for equestrian sports including air vests and safety vests with air canisters is the personal choice of each participant and their parent/guardian. It is the responsibility of the rider and their coach to ensure proper use of personal safety equipment and gear in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. IEA does not assume responsibility for the function or malfunction of such safety equipment. In certain instances safety equipment and the use thereof may present a risk of harm to the participant, the animals, and other riders. The possible malfunction of safety equipment, one’s own equipment or another rider’s equipment, constitutes an inherent risk of the sport and as such is included within the waiver of liability agreed to when becoming an IEA member.

Ride EquiSafe, a seller of air canister vests, has provided two informational videos:

1. Why using the saddle strap is important for the vest to function correctly. (video above) and

2. How to attach a saddle strap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU3Wcp63QsM

Please note that IEA does not endorse any specific brand of personal safety equipment.

As always, if members have a rulebook question, please reach out to info@rideiea.org for clarification. Thank you.
