The 1916 Virtual Revolution: How IEEE's Ancestors Pioneered Remote Collaboration

Allison Marsh, associate professor at the University of South Carolina and historian of technology, explores in IEEE Spectrum the remarkable 1916 telephonic meeting hosted by AIEE (IEEE's predecessor) that connected 5,100 engineers across multiple cities. The event was orchestrated to commemorate recent achievements in communications, transportation, light, and power.

Hear a compelling discussion about this groundbreaking transcontinental gathering and its striking parallels to today's virtual meetings. Marsh highlights how these engineering pioneers enhanced engagement through musical interludes and dynamic keynote speakers —creative social elements that remain essential for effective virtual collaboration a century later.

Submit Your 2025 Conference Applications Now Before Time Runs Out

Partnering with IEEE sponsors and submitting your IEEE Conference Application are essential first steps on your conference journey.

IEEE Policy 10 establishes a 12-month approval timeline before your event date. Meeting this deadline secures IEEE branding benefits and visibility in IEEE Conference Search, while late applications risk rejection. Submit your application today at IEEE Conference Application.

Streamline Your Conference-Related Awards Process: How IEEE Helps You Honor Contributors

Ensuring smooth processing of your conference awards and honorariums helps recognize contributors promptly and efficiently. For best results, please submit all award forms to the Conference Contracts team before requesting payment, ideally before your event concludes. Here's a simplified pathway to success:

1. Execute Acknowledgment Forms First: Have the recipient sign the acknowledgment form before submitting it to the Conference Contracts team, along with chair approval.

2. Batch Submissions: We suggest batching all documents for a particular conference and sending them in one email to conference-contracts@ieee.org once they are ready.

3. Contracts Management System (CMS) Process: After receiving the executed forms, the Conference Contracts team will input them into CMS, allowing you to then request payment.

4. Alternative Process (if signature cannot be obtained): If you cannot obtain the recipient’s signature in advance, submit the forms into the NextGen Contracts portal (CMS) as you would a normal contract. The team will process the forms for approval and send them via DocuSign for signature.

5. Form Access: The acknowledgment forms are available on the Legal & Compliance website. If you encounter issues accessing the forms or are unsure of which one to use, please contact the team for the most recent version.

For any questions related to this process, please reach out to the Conference Contracts team.
