Canada tries to prevent COVID-19 variants from entering country
Airlines operating in Canada have agreed to suspend all flights to and from Mexico and Caribbean countries until April 30, 2021. This will be in effect as of January 31, 2021. Also, starting at 11:59 p.m. ET on Feb. 3, all international passenger, private and charter flights, including from the U.S., will land at the Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal airports. In addition, on top of submitting a negative COVID-19 test prior to departure, passengers will soon be required to take a mandatory COVID-19 test upon arrival in Canada at their own cost. Travellers will then have to wait up to three days at a government-approved hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to be more than $2,000. Those with a negative test will then be able to finish their 14-day quarantine at home, with increased surveillance. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam added that returnees will also be swabbed on day 10. Read more
In Manitoba, Dr. Roussin advises that about 5% of COVID-19 tests are being targeted for variant testing based on travel history.

Parking options at RBC convention centre expanded
Beginning Feb. 1, individuals who have an appointment at the Winnipeg supersite at the RBC Convention Centre may also park in a surface lot on York Avenue at no cost in addition to free parking underground. Parking patrol officers will be on site in the Workers Compensation Board lot, which is southeast of the main entrance, to help direct people to available stalls. Bring your parking ticket with you when you come to your appointment for validation.
Important reminder to those with appointments
Yesterday, Manitoba announced that some second-dose appointments may need to be rescheduled due to reduced Pfizer vaccine shipments from the federal government. The province will reach out to affected people by email or text to reschedule appointments if necessary. Plan to attend your second dose appointments as scheduled unless you are contacted. Manitoba is committed to providing second dose appointments within the recommended timeframe.
Vaccine Supply and Distribution
Yesterday, Manitoba received confirmation from the federal government that 12,870 fewer doses (11 trays) of the Pfizer vaccine will be shipped to the province by the end of March. This means Manitoba will receive 161,460 doses, instead of 174,330.
To date, a total of 55,650 doses of vaccine has been delivered to Manitoba. This includes:
• 40,950 doses of Pfizer vaccine, based on six doses per vial; and
• 14,700 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
Next week, Manitoba expects to receive shipments of 7,600 Moderna doses and 2,340 Pfizer doses. The province has also been advised of potential disruptions to Moderna supply as well but it's not yet known to what extent.
First dose done for most personal care home residents!
Tomorrow, the last personal care home in Manitoba will be visited as part of the first delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations to residents. In three weeks, the FITs have visited every licensed personal care home in communities across the province. As of Jan. 27, 5,259 residents had received the COVID-19 vaccine.
