COVID-19 Staff News - November 18, 2020
TODAY'S QUOTE
There is big work out there trying to convince people that this just isn’t important and I don’t know necessarily what the motivations are from that…It’s very clear that our hospitals are reaching capacity. We continue to have to expand our ICU capacity and we won’t be able to do that forever…We’re announcing deaths all the time. We see outbreaks in personal care homes, we see outbreaks in hospitals and we see our numbers just trending in the wrong direction…It would be great if by just ignoring it we’d all be OK. But it’s quite clear, it should be quite obvious, that is not the case. We’re in this pandemic. We’re going to be in it for awhile. We need to decrease the transmission of this virus.

Dr. Roussin, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer

In the news:

The province has introduced a fine of $298 for people who do not wear masks in indoor public spaces. This is in addition to other fines that include $5,000 for businesses that open when they are not allowed to, or that don’t follow capacity limits. People who fail to self-isolate when ordered, or who gather in groups larger than five, can be fined $1,296.

A drive-up testing site expected to open Friday in the parking lot of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) training academy at 2546 McPhillips St. will be dedicated to testing police officers, firefighters, paramedics and emergency communications personnel with the potential to also offer a limited number of slots to health-care workers. Appointments will be available Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Health-care workers and first responders needing a COVID-19 test can book an appointment at this site by calling 1-855-268-4318 (toll-free). Individuals will need to show their professional identification at the testing site to access their pre-booked appointment.

The province has signed a contract with G4S Canada, a security services company, to boost COVID-19 public health order enforcement efforts. Once fully operational, it is anticipated G4S will provide upwards of 90 personnel to bolster the complement of provincial employees enforcing public health orders.

Manitobans can report compliance and enforcement issues by visiting www.manitoba.ca/COVID19 and completing the reporting form, or by calling 204-945-3744 or 1-866-626-4862 (toll-free) and pressing option three on the call menu.

The third in a series of telephone town halls is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19. This week’s town hall will give Manitobans the opportunity to ask Dr. Roussin and Dr. Jazz Atwal, a provincial medical officer of health, about what they can do to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at the Critical (red) level. Manitobans can register to participate in Thursday’s telephone town hall. Read more
