IFA Celebrates Vision Health Month
This May, IFA celebrates Vision Health Month. Vision health is of utmost importance for healthy ageing, maintaining functional ability and ensuring good quality of life. Older people disproportionately experience vision impairment with 77% of vision loss occurring in adults 50 years of age and older. As the global population ages and with increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, there is a need to ensure appropriate and timely vision care for all.
IFA’s Eye See You campaign and DR Barometer Program aim to influence policy and advanceperson-centred vision care. Both bodies of work focus on mobilizing evidence to influence policy and practice around ageing- and diabetes-related vision complications.
More specifically, the ESY Biosimilars in Ophthalmology Program provides a platform for knowledge exchange for a patient-centered approach to biosimilar policies, which protects and respects the rights of patients and their caregivers to make informed decisions regarding their vision health. The ESY program is committed to raising awareness about emerging vision-related policies; facilitating timely access to educational resources regarding biosimilars; connecting Canadians to experts and thought leaders in vision health; and creating opportunities for Canadians to engage in discourse surrounding biosimilars in ophthalmology.
The IFA advocates for the development of tailored policies derived from consultations between patients and physicians that support safe, effective, and appropriate management and treatment, specific to the needs of patients and their eye conditions. Working in vision health for more than a decade, this May the IFA will continue its engagement with ageing and vision health organizations through interviews and webinars to shed light on recent biosimilars policies and their impact on patient care.
Join us this vision health month to raise awareness on the importance of eye health, prevention of vision loss, and improving policy and practice to support access to comprehensive vision care.

World Immunization Week 2023
| |
In celebration of World Immunization Week “The Big Catch Up” last month from April 24-30th, the International Federation on Ageing, through its Vaccines4Life portfolio, has released several programs of work, to contribute to the global momentum of advocating the benefits of vaccines, as a key contributor to healthy ageing.
Each year, World Immunization Week brings together people from around the world to highlight the importance of vaccines. Vaccines are critical to the prevention and control of many diseases, across all ages, and therefore underpin global health security.
Immunization throughout the life course is an effective public health intervention, that not only contributes to maintaining and improving population health across all ages but reduces the burden on healthcare professionals and systems.
Follow @Vaccines4Life to like, share and join in the call to action to prioritize vaccination for all.

Driving the Agenda of Pneumococcal
On the 27th of April, the technical report for the project, ‘Driving the Agenda of Pneumococcal Pneumonia Vaccination in At-risk Populations in Community and Long-term Care’ was launched. The release of this report follows the culmination of a policy gap analysis, a survey disseminated to key stakeholders across Canada, and expert roundtable where gaps and issues from this research were deliberated. This report investigates gaps in policy and the absence of public health communication that are preventing older adults in long-term care from receiving pneumococcal vaccination across Canada.
Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among at-risk populations in Canada, with an especially high burden among older adults in long-term care settings. However, the uptake rates of adult pneumococcal vaccination remain suboptimal across the country. An absence and lack of awareness of recommendations and existing public health communication for long-term care settings is a key barrier to improving uptake rates.
The, ‘Driving the Agenda of Pneumococcal Pneumonia Vaccination in At-risk Populations in Community and Long-term Care’ study was conducted to understand the status of existing public health policies and campaigns on pneumococcal disease in community and long-term care settings and its implications on the uptake of pneumococcal vaccination. This study finds that within long-term care settings in Canada, vaccination policies for pneumococcal disease are inconsistent, absent, or vague across all provinces and territories. Even when they are available, they are not always accessible. Moreover, the study finds that public health communication on the pneumococcal vaccination of older adults in long-term care settings is ineffective, as there is an overall lack of awareness from long-term care providers and associations, older adults, and the public on these policies and recommendations.
The findings and recommendations outlined in the technical report of this study are anticipated to help address existing gaps for pneumococcal vaccination policy and inform the development of effective vaccination policies for long-term care settings.
