Adult Vaccination Healthcare Provider Education Program
The International Federation on Ageing (IFA) is proud to announce the second edition of the “Adult Vaccination Healthcare Provider ECHO.” This innovative program aims to help build the capacity and capability of diverse healthcare providers as champions of adult immunization to improve rates of vaccination and save lives.
Healthcare providers (HCPs), civil society, patient associations, and advocacy groups, alongside thought leaders represent key stakeholders with the ability to impact adult vaccination uptake rates through direct interaction with at-risk populations, including older people, patients, and caregivers.
The IFA Adult Vaccination Healthcare Provider (AV-HCP) Education program aims to bring these key stakeholders together in a sustainable and scalable educational program to build capacity and capability within diverse HCPs with regards to common concerns, gaps, and challenges with regards to adult vaccination.
Registration for this Program is now open, with bi-weekly sessions from 20 October – 15 December 2023 at 9 am EST.
For more information visit the webpage or contact Ms. Emma Schmidt at eschmidt@ifa.ngo.

AFE - ECHO Program
On behalf of the World Health Organization and the International Federation on Ageing it is a pleasure to invite new and emerging leaders of age-friendly cities and communities from around the world to participate in an innovative and exciting learning opportunity: the second edition of the Age-friendly Environments (AFE) ECHO Programme. The program will provide a safe environment where participants can share knowledge and learn from experts and other learners through collaborative problem-solving, to gain the skills necessary to advocate and drive the age-friendly model within their own city and/or community.
Background
The WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) was established in 2010 to connect cities, communities and organizations worldwide with the common vision of making their community a great place to grow older in. Through the Network’s on-line platform “Age-friendly World”, members access tools and resources that can guide and support their age-friendly work and exchange and learn from each other. Network members are also supported by 18 Affiliates, including the IFA, that play an essential role in promoting the creation of age-friendly environments and facilitating information exchange and learning between communities.
Program Curriculum Topics
The AFE ECHO is a multi-session learning cycle comprising of 5 one-hour sessions from 7.00 – 8.15am ET taking place bi-weekly over a 2-month period from 4 October to 29 November. Participants are expected to attend all sessions, as the experience and knowledge is cumulative. Operationalizing the Lifecourse Immunization Benchmarking Workshop
|
The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) Life-course Immunization: Country Landscape Report is a benchmark body of work that should be used to complement the evidence-to-action work being conducted by civil society organizations globally.
As a mechanism to raise awareness of this evidence and determine through thoughtful leadership the most powerful ways to help drive this important agenda, the International Federation on Ageing, in partnership with IFPMA, are convening a high-level ‘scoping to action’ two-day virtual workshop in October.

Contextualizing gendered ageism in the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing
Population ageing is a global phenomenon alongside urbanisation and migration which impacts societies, economies, and healthcare systems. There are currently more than 1 billion people over the age of 60 years, representing 14% of the global population and by 2050 this number will have more than doubled to 2.1 billion representing roughly 22% of the global population.
The United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing Ageism Through the Ages campaign recognizes the devastating impact of ageism on healthy ageing and outlines key strategies to combat ageism and progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – particularly those on gender equality and reducing inequities. As part of the strategic priorities to deliver person centered care and adequate primary health services to older people, there is a call for nations to eliminate the widespread ageism within their systems to improve the access and quality of social and health services to older people.
Recognizing the continued need to understand the effects of gendered ageism, the IFA hosted Ms. Peggy Edwards (founding member of the Grandmothers Advocacy Network) and Dr. Paula Rochon (founding director of Women’s Age Lab) to speak at a Global Café entitled Gendered Ageism: The Double Whammy of Intersecting Discrimination and How to Address it. They shared the importance of intergenerational collaboration to combat ageism, and the role of inclusive research practices and disaggregated data collection in better understanding older women’s health concerns.
For information on this important topic be sure to explore the Decade of Healthy Ageing Platform. This knowledge repository contains resources, toolkits, events, and articles relating to healthy ageing from numerous organizations and individuals.

Write to Your Government about the UN Open Ended Working Group on Ageing (OWEGA) Questionnaire
The UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing adopted a decision at its 13th session in April 2023 to:
Request the Chair of the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing to appoint two co-facilitators to facilitate the consideration of the existing international framework of the human rights of older persons and the identification of possible gaps in the protection of the human rights of older persons and how best to address them, and invites the co-facilitators to conduct open, transparent and inclusive informal intergovernmental meetings between the thirteenth and fourteenth sessions of the Working Group, with all States Members of the United Nations, members of the specialized agencies, and observers in the General Assembly, and to collaborate with national human rights institutions and non-governmental organizations and the Independent Expert of the Human Rights Council on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, within her mandate.
This questionnaire can be completed by observers of the general assembly, National Human Rights Institutions, non-governmental organizations with ECOSOC Status, and previously accredited organizations who have participated in OWEGA. Completion of this questionnaire allows for the comprehensive responses and views of diverse participants to be understood and reflected in the work at the 14th session of the OWEGA.
To support the dissemination of the questionnaire, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People (GAROP) has prepared template letters that can be sent to members of Foreign Ministries and Permanent Missions to the UN in New York City which encourage policy makers to consult older adults, civil society, and other stakeholders to submit a comprehensive response to the questionnaire. Links to both the questionnaire and templates can be found below.
