Final Countdown
to the 2023 Conference
It's just a few weeks to go until the Annual Conference, and we are working with the local organizing committee to get the final things in order.
With several years since the last in-person conference, we are certainly excited to see you again face-to-face in Jamaica. The working papers are currently being consolidated and distributed by the Office. Please take the time to review working papers of interest to you and consider any feedback for the discussions during committee sessions.
For those joining us for the first time, keep an eye out for the information and social media posts from the communications team on how things work. Also, please check the schedule for the week, which is slightly different than usual with some exciting workshops on Monday.
Come together with passion and enthusiasm, don't be afraid to participate or ask questions, we are all one big family.
Duncan Auld, IFATCA President & CEO

The IFATCA website has a new section with articles as traditionally appeared in The Controller. Rather than producing a 'magazine' layout every few months, this allows us to publish longer and more topical articles faster and with more interactive elements. Constructive feedback and, of course, articles are always welcome via editor@ifatca.org

Following last year’s World ATM Congress in Madrid, CANSO and ATCA announced they would part ways. CANSO indicated they would organise a new event, Airspace World, in Geneva, Switzerland. Other than the location, there were no major differences once inside the venue. Both the IFEMA in Madrid and the Palexpo at Geneva airport are comparable huge halls that host virtually the same exhibitors.

On 28-29 March 2023, the Trinidad and Tobago MA, TTATCA hosted an IFATCA Competency Based Training and Assessment Workshop in Piarco, Trinidad and Tobago. The event was attended by approximately 45 participants from Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Dominican Republic, and the United States. JF Lepage (CATCA) facilitated the workshop, assisted by RVP Ramon Armora (DR) and EVP AMA Trish Gilbert (USA).
The Trinidad & Tobago Air Traffic Controllers Association (TTATCA) Executive Board and many others from TTATCA did a tremendous amount of work preparing for the workshop and administering an extraordinarily organized event, including ad-hoc meetings and tours. Their incredible dedication ensured the best possible experience.
A special thanks to the Trinidad & Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA) for graciously providing well-equipped facilities and for sponsoring and supporting TTATCA in the organization of the workshop.

Dates announced for the 34th AFM Regional Meeting
The 2023 Africa and Middle East Region Regional Meeting will be held in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, from November 21-23. This is the second time the conference will be held in Algeria. The previous time was in 2007, with a record attendance of 32 MAs.
| |
|
The organisers aim to deliver an even better experience to guests to help consolidate regional unity. The theme for this year's conference is "Training", chosen because it is the starting point for achieving excellence, correcting weaknesses in systems, maintaining excellence, and moving forward. The meeting hopes to contribute to guests' knowledge and emphasize the importance of training to improve performance.
Meet the Africa & Middle East Communications Team
The IFATCA AFM Region now has a Communications Team. It was established late last year and currently comprises of:
- Sid Ahmed (Algeria)
- Maureen Isika (Kenya)
- Ester Katusime (Uganda)
- Kalasichaila Kalasile (Zambia)
- Selebogo Makoko (Botswana)
- Simbarashe Mwaba(Zambia)
- Wickel Yanick (Cote d’Ivoire).
The team looks forward to getting a few more members to have a diverse pool of talent and skills and balance gender and sub-regional representation.
| |
The Regional Communications Team plays a role inshowing the VISIBILITY and VALUE of IFATCA in the region, bringing out what is happening in the AFM Region as well as the work of the EVP, RVPs and other IFATCA reps. Among the things it has been able to share is; a webinar hosted by GHATCA, an AGM by the Malawi Air Traffic Controllers Association that is hopefully soon joining the IFATCA family as well as Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority’s appreciation of the role of IFATCA in the World Cup 2022.On 8th March, International Women’s Day, the team made a video of Women in the AFM region as a way of celebrating them.
|
|
The team aims to be more robust in the near future and diversify into many areas including writing articles which is alsoa great way of communicating.
The formation of the Communications Team will also demystify the ATC profession, IFATCA and also help us learn from each other in this information age!
