The Carolinas Chapter gathered on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the new American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame to celebrate the group’s 11th Night of Luminaries and Rising Stars. The 2023 Luminary Award honoree is Barbour Spangle Design, led by Christi Barbour and Christi Spangle.
Rising Stars are the top design students across the Carolinas as selected by their college or university. 18 Rising Stars were honored along with the winner of the 2023 Ruth Clark Scholarship for Furniture Design, Penina Bernstein, from the Rhode Island School of Design. The Ruth Clark Scholarship is founded and funded by the Carolinas Chapter and administered by the Educational Foundation.
Each student displayed examples of their work which were presented during a special cocktail reception in their honor.
The Educational Foundation helped underwrite our Night of Luminaries and Rising Stars with a Chapter Partnership Grant.

IFDA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS | |
On November 6th the International Board of Directors and Council of Presidents gathered in King of Prussia for their annual in person meeting. The one director and one president unable to make the trip attended via zoom. The Chair and the Vice Chair of the IFDA Educational Foundation were also in attendance.
The meeting was very constructive with lots of ideas and information being shared. The budget for 2025 was approved by the COP. It wasn't without a few technical issues like the AV equipment acting up, a regional black out, and the lunch order being lost, but overall it was considered a success. Dawn Brinson, FIFDA, the outgoing International President, thanked those leaving the board with a lovely gift and turned over the gavel to the incoming International President, Larissa Cook, who in turn thanked Dawn for her service and presented her with a gift as well.
Luckily the Philadelphia President, Katy Lynn Retzbach, who was 9
months pregnant with twins, did not add to the excitement except for her presentation of a rather "Large" check to the Educational Foundation. Other Chapters also followed the "check waiving" ritual and made donations to the IFDA Educational Foundation.
A lovely dinner followed where new friendships were formed and old friendships celebrated.

Industry icon and long-time supporter of IFDA and Educational Foundation, Raymond Waites was born in Demopolis, Alabama on May 28, 1940, and passed on November 7, 2023, in High Point, NC, the city he loved. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Caldwell Waites.
A top graduate of Auburn University with a master’s degree from Pratt Institute, he worked in Finland as Creative VP of Design Research – Marimekko where he was responsible for the design direction and opened retail stores in the United States, Japan and around the world.
In 1973, Raymond founded Gear-Holdings with Betty Martin. He developed the first coordinated program of home furnishings for Sears, designing and merchandising coordinated collections across the departments, a first for the industry.
Raymond joined IFDA as part of the New York Chapter in 1986 and in 1995 was honored with the IFDA International Trailblazer Award. He was very active in the organization and often participated in panel discussions and educational seminars as well as mentoring students. He also initiated a Raymond Waites Design Competition that IFDA EF held every other year for three years.
He said, “The principles of the Raymond Waites Design Competition are to foster creative spirit, visual inspiration and rooms that have an emotional warmth; rooms that are comfortable, functional, friendly…and display an ageless mix of design influences reflecting various cultures.”
In 1994, Raymond founded Raymond Waites Design, creating products that produced $4.5 billion of branded and private-label products. In 2007, he added Remix Atelier, a design and licensing company with his partner Russell Berge.
An author of six books, he is a recognized leader and founder of the American Country movement in home furnishings in the 80’s and Vintage Home in the 90’s.
Raymond Waites' designs are still available today. Branded vintage items are available on 1st Dibs and Chairish.
A Raymond Waites Scholarship is being set up by IFDA and IFDA EF so students and industry professionals can explore the world of design that he and his wife, Nancy, loved.
