Unlocking the Capacity of Families to Create Value Together
Message from Nulsen Family Executive Director
Who hasn’t heard family business a story that goes something like this: Parent starts a very successful business and welcomes child to join the company. Parent and child clash and soon are hardly on speaking terms. Child leaves the business. Everyone is disappointed.

We all know that family business can be as challenging as it can be rewarding. The above scenario is most certainly not the outcome that any family desires, but far too often, some variation of it is what happens. And when it does, there is a loss of value creation opportunity, potential for family legacy and impact, and most importantly, degradation of close family relationships.

Legacy and Achievement in Family Entrepreneurship
by William Gartner, Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor
of Family Entrepreneurship
In discussions with entrepreneurial families about their futures, I often suggest that each family member consider four aspects of their lives (achievement, happiness, significance and legacy) as a framework for exploring their goals and values. This framework comes from – “Just Enough” – written by Laura Nash and Howard Stevenson. The book focuses on what “success” in life means for highly successful individuals (and families). Often there is a mismatch and many misunderstandings among family members in regards to what they want across these four dimensions of success. This is often the case in terms of issues of legacy and achievement.
