President’s Message

What a fabulous conference in June in Kansas City, MO. I hope you were able to attend and enjoy the keynote speakers, educational sessions, and connecting with colleagues at the Expo, among other activities.

The Sharon McManus Cultural Event was splendid thanks to the coordination of Dr. Mia Russell. We spent the evening at the Majestic Restaurant, which first opened as the Fitzpatrick Saloon. During Prohibition, it was converted into a Haberdashery, and the bar relocated to the basement, creating a speakeasy. Today, the speakeasy is home to the Kansas City Jazz Club. The Manager of the Majestic Restaurant shared the history of the building, jazz, and Kansas City. He also shared how Family and Consumer Science has impacted individuals, families, and the local community over the years and continues to do so today. We enjoyed excellent food, conversation, and raised funds to support four students from Morgan State University in attending this event with us.

The IFHE-US Annual Business Meeting was held, and minutes will be sent to the membership upon review. Highlights include approval of the fiscal year budget and a call for the appointment of a Nominating Committee Chair.

Fifteen Years, Fifteen Facts:

Challenges and Solutions for Gender Equality

Submitted by:

Susan Shockey, PhD, CFCS, CPFFE, IFHE-US United Nations Chair

This article comes from the UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to

gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. As UN Women marks its 15th anniversary this year, the world has seen important progress in gender equality across the globe.

A survey from March 2025 shows a 60 per cent increase in concern about the lack of progress on gender equality. UN Women data from more than 150 government reports confirm why: nearly one in four countries is seeing a backlash against women’s rights. Gender-based violence is rising. The gender digital divide is widening. And over 600 million women and girls now live near conflict zones.

UN Women marks its 15th anniversary with a renewed commitment to continue delivering for the 4 billion women and girls across the globe. To push forward on gender equality, UN Women is calling for 15 Actions.

The Website below will provide the “15 Actions and Solutions”.
