To all our Walkers, Donors, those who helped spread the word, and to our Sponsors, THANK YOU!!!
Your generosity and support helped make the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County's VIRTUAL IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's a success!
The funds raised will allow us to continue to deliver vital programs and services to the residents of Simcoe County living with dementia, and their care partners and families who depend on them.
Over $36,000 has been raised so far (and counting!)
DONATIONS ARE STILL BEING ACCEPTED ONLINE.
Click here to make your donation.
We plan to provide an update on the total amount raised this year, along with the names of the top individual and team fundraisers once everything is tallied. We appreciate your patience and understanding given that this is our first experience with an online event.
Cash donations and pledge forms will be accepted in the Barrie office by appointment only. Please call 705-722-1066 or email
simcoecounty@alzheimersociety.ca to make arrangements for drop off.
We ask that you follow these instructions for everyone's safety:
- Please place pledge forms, cash and cheque donations in a sealed bag or envelope.
- When arriving, please use the doorbell that will notify our staff you have arrived.
- Once we make visual contact with you, please leave your package outside the door, and we will then open the door and retrieve it without contact to ensure physical distancing.
We will quarantine the packages for a few days before opening and verifying the donations.

Our Connections Matter - despite not being able to visit with each other face-to-face, we are still staying connected through online Social, Support and Education programs. We are utilizing the Zoom platform for our group activities and it is safe and easy to install. If you've never used Zoom before, we have a number of tip sheets on how to start and would be happy to walk you through this process if you have any questions. Please note, there is no cost to participate in a session through Zoom.
In additions,
all Zoom sessions are accessible by phone if you'd prefer to participate that way. Call-in phone numbers are provided in the meeting invitation.

Fundraising Events Update
|
|
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County is having to rethink how we undertake fundraising events and campaigns in a safe manner this year. We successfully transitioned our IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s to a virtual event in a very short period of time in collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Canada and other Alzheimer Societies across Ontario. We will be working with our provincial colleagues to identify other ways we can host online events, including our annual Coffee Break
®
campaign in the fall.
Unfortunately, we have decided to cancel our Tag Day fundraiser this year to mitigate health and safety concerns. We want to thank those volunteers who normally assist with this campaign, and hope that we can find other ways for you to be involved in fundraising activities in 2020.
Stay tuned for further updates over the summer months!
We look forward to the ongoing support of our community so that we can raise the funds required to continue providing essential programs and services to those affected by dementia in Simcoe County.

Meet another amazing volunteer!
|
|
In the late summer of 2018, volunteer Sue French came to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County. She had been retired for a while and was involved in other volunteer roles. "Retirement removes a person from connections with people", she said, "so I was looking for a 'hands-on' volunteer experience". Sue's interest in physical activity and cognitive challenges made her a good match with our Minds in Motion
® program that was beginning in the Midland and Penetanguishene area.
Sue thoroughly enjoys the exercises and finds they have thoughtful and deep discussions with the clients and care partners. Asked what a person needs to volunteer in this role, Sue responded "empathy and the ability to put aside any pre-conceived notions about Alzheimer's disease and dementia". Participating in Minds in Motion
® has "made me a better person. This has allowed me to understand Alzheimer's disease more and enables me to help others the way I wished someone could have helped my Dad".
We thank you, Sue, for your support and compassion!

Saying Goodbye to Stephanie Saunders
|
|
It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Stephanie Saunders will be leaving her role as Family Support Coordinator to pursue an opportunity to further her professional growth.
We want to acknowledge and thank Stephanie for her valuable contribution to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County since 2009, first as Support Counsellor, then Social Worker on the North Simcoe Muskoka Behaviour Support System Community Mobile Support Team, and finally as Family Support Coordinator.
We have developed a short-term transition plan to ensure there is minimal impact on client service.
We will miss Stephanie tremendously, and know our clients will too! Please join us in wishing her all the best wherever her path may lead.
