“Even to question, truly is an answer.” Those are the last words to one of our most beloved traditional hymns. Do you know which one?
Give up? Oh, I imagine one or two of you got it.
Shelley Jackson Denham wrote both the words and music in 1980. You can find them in our grey hymnal “Singing the Living Tradition” as #354 “We Laugh, We Cry.” The first and last verses are worth offering here.
We laugh, we cry, we live, we die,
We dance, we sing our song.
We need to feel there’s something here
To which we can belong.
We need to feel the freedom just to have some time alone.
But most of all we need close friends we can call our very own.
We seek elusive answers to the questions of this life.
We seek to put an end to all the waste of human strife.
We search for truth, equality, and blessed peace of mind.
And we come together here
To make sense of what we find.
Each verse ends with a chorus that says “we believe in life, and in the strength of love” and then goes on to name that we have found a need, a time, a place, a joy to be together. And the last line are things we have found to be an answer: sharing, growing, living, and questioning.
This hymn is a righteous bridge from our summer speaker series in which one of our members each week has been thoughtfully reflecting on one of our shared religious values. This rich sharing also fosters a greater sense of belonging among us. We just revel in each other’s stories and learn from the rich personal exploration of our values.
Yet, of course, we still have questions. Lots of them. And so beginning in September, each month our theme will be a question and we will spend the month exploring potential answers in worship and in small group. We will be asking What is it to Embrace your Heart? What the Heck is a Unitarian Universalist? Why and what do we celebrate? How do we live our faith in crisis?
We hope that the questions asked will encompass some of yours. We know our conversations will be meaningful and remind us why Common Flame is the congregation that holds us and renews us in our belief in life and the strength of love.
Blessings and love,
Rev. Wendy
