Dear Friends and Supporters of IGOT,

Thank you to everyone who has supported IGOT's mission to collaborate with partners around the world to promote equity in orthopaedic care. We have had the opportunity to hold SMART Courses near and far - in the US, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Mexico!

In 2025, IGOT will continue to create free, accessible online educational content, support educational exchange, and conduct practice-changing research. We are excited to continue collaborating and learning with our partners worldwide on projects improving musculoskeletal care.

Mexico SMART Course

The 4th Annual Mexico SMART Course was held in Oaxaca on January 9-11, 2025 in collaboration with the Mexican Orthopaedic Society, FEMECOT (Federación Mexicana de Colegios de Ortopedia y Traumatología). Twenty-two participants from Mexico, Colombia, and Cuba attended the course led by national and international orthopaedic and plastic surgery faculty. The course included didactics, case discussions, and Bioskills labs.

We are also excited to announce the beginning of a new resident global rotation site with our partners at Hospital San Lucas in Oaxaca, Mexico.

OTA Podium Presentation Award

A study led by last year's IGOT Research Fellow, Francisco Gomez-Alvarado, was awarded the best International Podium by the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). The paper entitled "Delayed Surgery Increases the Rate of Infection in Closed Long Bone Fractures in Low-and Middle-Income Countries" was recently published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS).

The study was conducted in collaboration with IGOT partner, SIGN Fracture Care International. The results highlight the importance of timely surgical care for closed fractures in low- and middle-income countries, which have received less attention from the global health community. IGOT is grateful to all the surgeons around the world who contributed data to the SIGN database.
