The US government will support a potential temporary waiver of intellectual property protections "in service of ending this pandemic," according to US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, who made the announcement of the government's position on Wednesday. "Handing needy countries a recipe book without the ingredients, safeguards, and sizable workforce needed will not help people waiting for the vaccine," said Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization.

Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for COVID-19 at the World Health Organization, announced at a briefing that the B1617 SARS-CoV-2 variant, which was first detected in India, is now considered a variant of concern along with B117, B1351 and P1. A preliminary analysis suggests ​the B1617 variant, which has three sublineages, is more transmissible, but public health restrictions and measures such as social distancing, limiting gatherings and mask wearing appear to work against the variant, Van Kerkhove said.

Census: Indiana Congressional Delegation Unchanged
The U.S. Census Bureau has completed processing the first 2020 Census results. Indiana will remain unchanged with nine seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, based on state population. Following reports regarding the further delay of the Medicare Coverage for Innovative Technology rule, 37 Democratic members of Congress wrote to acting CMS Administrator Liz Richter calling for the agency to push through with the breakthrough rule as soon as possible and voiced their support for the MCIT. AdvaMed has also gathered comments from investors, politicians, medtech companies and other stakeholders to show support for the rule.
