Final reconciliation package a "disservice to patients and researchers"
August 7, 2022
BIO's Statement on the Drug Pricing Provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act
Senate lawmakers today passed a sweeping, $740 billion reconciliation package after an all-night session. Following the vote, Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), made the following statement:
"Nothing we heard from the lengthy floor debate on the Senate floor over the past two days can take away from the fact that every credible analysis of the Inflation Reduction Act comes to the same conclusion: fewer cures for patients. For that reason, we remain in staunch opposition to the government price control schemes included in the final reconciliation package passed today.

The signing of the Inflation Reduction Act into law that grants Medicare the ability to "negotiate" drug prices aims to lower health care costs for Americans; however, from the point of view of those in the pharma and biotech industries, this would not be the case. The new law "would drastically slow critical investments in future research and development, stalling drug innovation, and ensuring the next generation of groundbreaking therapies remains out of reach for American patients," said BIO President and CEO Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath.

Eli Lilly and Co., one of the largest and oldest companies in Indiana, announced Saturday it will look outside the state for corporate expansion projects in the wake of a sweeping abortion ban passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb on Friday. The Indianapolis-based drugmaker said the abortion law could hinder its ability to attract diverse scientific, engineering and business talent to Indiana. Columbus-based Cummins Inc., another of the state’s biggest employers, echoed Lilly’s concerns about talent recruitment and retention in a media release on Saturday and said, “As we continue to grow our footprint with a focus on selecting communities that align with our values and business goals, this law will be considered in our decision-making process.” A Lilly spokeswoman said the company still plans to honor its current commitments in Indiana. In May, it announced plans  to spend $2.1 billion to open two manufacturing sites in Boone County. IBJ’s John Russell has more.
Indiana needs to spend an additional $242 million a year to help improve the state’s strained and fragmented public health system, a blue-ribbon commission recommended Thursday. The state ranks among the worst in the nation for obesity, smoking, infant mortality and other critical measures, and the life expectancy of Hoosiers has declined in recent years after peaking in 2010, the commission said. More

Eiteljorg Museum Plans Scottish Exhibition
One of the interesting conversations that came out of the SLA visit in May was a connection to an upcoming exhibition at the Eiteljorg Museum of Native American Art in Indianapolis. In August 2023, the museum will feature the works of Alfred Jacob Miller - a Scottish landscape artist who sketched and painted scenes of the American West on behalf of his patron, Sir William Drummond Stewart. Originally displayed in Murthly Castle in Perthshire, Scotland, the collection has been reassembled and will be displayed as it would have appeared to Sir Stewart. The paintings show details of the Rendezvous - an important trading event for Native Americans, trappers, traders, and inhabitants of the American West in the 1800s. For more information on the exhibit or if you might have an interest in becoming a corporate sponsor, please learn more. IHIF and SLA are excited to help support this fascinating cultural connection!
