I hope all of our members are off to a good start in 2017. IHLA begins a busy year by hosting several events during the next three months. On February 7th, IHLA will host our first GM Breakfast Meeting of 2017 with keynote speaker Alderman Michele Smith. Alderman Smith will update us on several issues including the latest information on the enforcement of the Short-Term Rental Ordinance that passed City Council last June 22nd and became effective on December 17, 2016. Alderman Smith is a major advocate of strict enforcement of this ordinance.
On February 22nd, IHLA will host the 7th Annual Anniversary & GM Connect Event for our Under 30 Gateway Chapter at the Conrad Chicago. Hotel General Managers are invited to join our Under 30 Chapter members for networking and fun. Click HERE to register.
On March 7th, IHLA will host our annual Lobby Day in Springfield. Over 50 IHLA members are expected to help IHLA lobby our state legislators on issues that are critical to our industry in Illinois. The Illinois Restaurant Association and the Illinois Council of Convention and Visitor Bureaus will be joining IHLA's Lobby Day once again to give our hospitality industry a much stronger voice as we meet with legislators representing all parts of the state. Several keynote speakers will address our group, and meetings with the top leaders of the General Assembly are being scheduled. Click

On March 19-22, the Illinois Governor's Conference on Travel & Tourism will take place at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield. If you or any of your staff members would like to attend the Governor's Conference to hear the State of the State's Tourism Address as well as other tourism industry speakers and participate in several tourism sessions, click HERE for more information and to register.
On March 24th, IHLA will host our 29th Annual Hospitality Gala at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. Please plan on joining us to for this wonderful hotel industry event. Finally, on May 17-18, AH&LA will be hosting its annual Legislative Action Summit (LAS) in Washington, D.C. This year, the new Trump Administration should make LAS very interesting. AH&LA once again is joining forces with the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AHHOA) to demonstrate a strong voice for the lodging industry on Capitol Hill. Please join IHLA's large contingency of members in hearing great keynote speakers and then educating several members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation on key issues affecting our industry at the federal level. Meet Our 2017 IHLA Chairman, Dean Lane
Dean is a 30 year veteran of the hotel and resort industry and is currently the General Manager of the historic Palmer House, A Hilton Hotel, the longest continuously operating hotel in North America. His responsibilities include the overall day to day operations of the 145-year-old, 1,641 room, Chicago landmark hotel institution.
Dean is a graduate of the University of Nevada and started his tenure with the Palmer House in 2006. Prior to his appointment there, he managed the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak and Tapatio Cliffs Resorts in Phoenix, Arizona. He began his hotel career at the 2,000 room MGM Grand Hotel in Reno, Nevada working in such positions as Valet Parking, Bell Desk, and Front Desk. He quickly ascended the management ladder while transitioning through two ownership changes in the same building; Bally's Reno and the Reno Hilton where he eventually served as the Executive Assistant Manager overseeing multiple departments.
Dean was awarded the IHLA 2016 Ambassador of Hospitality and IHLA 2014 Hotelier of the Year, and he was named the 2015 Historic Hotelier of the Year by the Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It's Dean's unwavering commitment to every associate, every guest, and every detail that makes his leadership style so authentic and engaging. His dedication beyond the hotel in his community is seamless; in addition to his IHLA Chairman role, Dean is an active Board Member of the Chicago Loop Alliance and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana and a State Street Association Commissioner. He also previously served on the Harold Washington College Hospitality Advisory Board.
His role as Chairman will include a voice in governmental affairs issues that face our members as well as other important roles to help strengthen and grow the industry and develop future leaders. When asked about his Chairmanship, Dean stated, "First and foremost, I'm thrilled and honored to be the Chairman for the coming year. One goal in particular stands out in my mind, and that is a plan to increase the value of the IHLA membership in order to retain and attract new members." He went on to say, "I plan to work closely with the city of Chicago to ensure the new Short Term Rental Ordinance that goes into effect in 2017 is vigorously enforced and a level playing field is established. I will also continue to work with Governor Rauner and the democratic leadership of Illinois General Assembly to ensure that full state tourism funding is protected even if the budget stalemate continues next year in Springfield."
Like his quick ascension up the management ladder, Dean enjoys the thrill of mountain climbing, having climbed the Peak's in Colorado, Mt. Whitney in California, and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Dean makes his home in Orland Park with his wife Heather and son Samuel.

Constellation: 4 Reasons Investment & Natural Gas Strategies Work the Same Way
Have you ever compared the Standard & Poor's 500 ("S&P 500") Index and the New York Mercantile Exchange ("NYMEX") side-by-side? If you're like most people, no, why would you? But when you graph the activity of most markets over time, you'll see a jagged, up-and-down line that will most likely look different the next time you see it.
You'll see that the way we describe natural gas supply is the same. We talk about daily volumes, the day's high and low and historical trends. Natural gas and stock markets are very similar, but for some reason they are rarely treated that way.
Reasons you might think about managing your natural gas supply like your stocks:
1. They both accept the fact that the markets are always changing.
2. They both know not to eat the whole pie at once.
3. They both customize plans based on risk tolerance.
4. They both allow for "I'll do it myself" or "you do it for me" options.
So what does this mean for your business? The strategy you use for investments can also work for your natural gas supply strategy. What are you doing to minimize your risks? Do you know what your degree of risk tolerance is? Do you have the time to manage it yourself, or could you use the help of some experts?
However you might answer these questions, a strategic diversification plan can be built to meet these needs. To return to our comparison, despite age, career path or financial situation, thousands of people trust this same strategy - relying on a diversified retirement investment plan for the long-term. As an IHLA member, you have access to a trusted, IHLA-preferred energy supplier, Constellation, to develop this same strategy for your business.
