PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
On a personal note, July got off to a terrific start when my son Andrew got married to Jackie Appleman in Michigan on July 8th. It was truly a memorable and wonderful occasion for me, my family, and the Appleman family. Andy and Jackie are both attorneys who practice law in Michigan and live in Grand Rapids. Andy is the oldest of my two children. My daughter Ashley, is the Director of Marketing for the Magnificent Mile Association in Chicago. My wife Darlene and I are very proud of both of our children and we are thrilled to welcome Jackie into our family.

Also in July, IHLA hosted 75 young hotel staff members with our Under 30 Gateway Networking Dinner Cruise on July 11th aboard the Mystic Blue. This was a great event for the future leaders of the hotel industry to network and learn more about the industry. Everyone had a worthwhile experience and lots of fun on the cruise.

July was then highlighted by IHLA's Educational Foundation hosting our 11th Annual Pony Up for the Kids Fundraiser at Arlington Park Racecourse on July 13th. More than 80 attendees had a lot of fun and helped raise more than $16,000 for our Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. Special thanks to Constellation Energy, Hyatt Regency Chicago, Alvarez & Associates, Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport, McHugh Construction, and Nicolay & Dart, LLC for sponsoring the event, and to Karrie and the IHLA team for putting on this great event at Arlington Park. Some of our guests made money and everyone had a good time supporting a wonderful cause.

August will be a busy month starting with our General Managers Breakfast Meeting on August 1st aboard the Odyssey ship at Navy Pier. We will have the Director of the Illinois Bureau of Tourism, Cory Jobe, featured as our keynote speaker. Cory will share some of his plans for Illinois tourism during the upcoming year. Also speaking at the breakfast will be Ted Mandigo, who will present his Chicagoland hotel industry forecast for 2018. Ted's forecast should be very helpful to our hotel members as they prepare their budgets and business plans for next year.

August will be highlighted by IHLA's 29th Annual Super Golf Classic, scheduled for August 15th at Harborside International. I hope all members will participate in this outstanding event. Please join us for great food and beverages, spectacular golf, and incredible giveaways of more than 220 golf related gift items, numerous hole contest prizes, wonderful raffles of cash, travel packages, and electronic items, and a variety of online auction items on which to bid. No golfer will go home without a nice gift. Please click HERE to purchase your foursomes and hole sponsorships.

Finally, Nominations for our 2017 Stars of the Industry program are due on August 17th. Please nominate all of your top employees in any or all of the eleven categories. This is a great way for you to give your employees industry recognition that costs you nothing. There are no nomination or other fees. All nominated employees are treated like winners and will be recognized at our Stars of the Industry recognition luncheons in October and November. Please submit your nominations HERE.

Best regards,

Marc

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
Legislative Update
Illinois is now - after two years - operating with a State Budget. The budget passed the Illinois General Assembly during the special session, was vetoed by the Governor, and the veto was over-ridden for the budget to become law.

During the entire budget process, IHLA had lobbied the General Assembly on our key message that "investment in Illinois' tourism is a huge ROI for the State", and our efforts were rewarded with a number of key tourism provisions in the budget:
  • 4.3% increase in FY2018 Tourism Funding
  • One-time appropriation for Choose Chicago to counteract the recent international negative publicity that has curtailed foreign visits
  • Separation of the Tourism Promotion Fund (TPF) from the General Fund, which will curb past practices of utilizing these funds for other non-tourism related purposes
  • 2% collection fee on all taxes collected by "McPier"
  • Authorization of $1.2B to be borrowed from "special funds" for payment of the back-log of bills

Heart of the House Tour with Congressman Schneider
On July 10th, Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, hosted U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider, Representing the 10th District of Illinois, for a Heart of the House Tour. Congressman Schneider met with employees and saw firsthand how the hotel industry plays an integral role in Illinois' 10th district and beyond. The tour was led by the property's GM, Eric Bates, who was accompanied by IHLA President & CEO, Marc Gordon, and American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) representative, Tim Molino.

"It was an honor to welcome Representative Schneider to the Chicago Lincolnshire Marriott Resort and showcase the unwavering dedication of the hotel's associates as they work day and night to achieve superior guest satisfaction, many of whom have worked at the hotel for their entire careers," stated General Manager Eric Bates. "We work hard to create a sense of community here at the Lincolnshire Resort and always enjoy opportunities to partner with the Village of Lincolnshire as we embrace the culture and character of our tranquil village and the surrounding areas."

The tour is part of the AHLA "Heart of the House" hotel tour program, which connects members of Congress with local hoteliers and employees in their congressional district. These personal tours give congressional leaders the opportunity to meet and hear from their constituents in the hospitality business and discuss the industry's impact on creating long-term careers, encouraging travel and tourism, and boosting economic growth and development.
