PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
June was a busy month for our hotel members and for IHLA. On June 13th, IHLA kicked off the month with 44th Ward Chicago Alderman speaking to our General Managers at NoMI Kitchen at Park Hyatt Chicago hosted by General Manager, Sara Kearney. Alderman Tunney, who represents Wrigleyville and the Lakeview/Lincoln Park neighborhoods and owns and operates three Ann Sather Restaurants, knows the hospitality industry better than any other elected official. Alderman Tunney, who is one of our greatest friends and supporters, will be a great leader for IHLA as we finalize several City proposed ordinances in the next few months.

On June 21st, IHLA hosted our 5th Annual Illinois Women in Lodging Mentorship & Networking Boat Cruise on the Mystic Blue. The event was tremendously successful with over 110 attendees enjoying wonderful weather, food and beverages, and great networking opportunities. Thanks to all the women leaders from our member hotels who supported this event.

Also in June, IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee met via conference call on June 8th to select the finalists from numerous candidates who applied for IHLAEF's 2017/18 academic year scholarships. On June 29th, the Scholarship Committee interviewed the finalists to determine this year's recipients. Each of our 25 scholarship winners will receive a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and a maximum scholarship of $5,000. Winners will be announced shortly, and over $50,000 will be awarded during the upcoming 2017/18 academic year. Thanks to all our members who helped make it possible for our Educational Foundation to help these deserving students.

IHLA continues to be busy in July starting with starting with our Under 30 Gateway Networking Dinner Cruise on July 11th aboard the Mystic Blue. This is a great event for the future leaders of the hotel industry to network and learn about the hotel industry. Please encourage your under 30 staff members to take advantage of this great opportunity by registering for this event HERE.

Finally, IHLA is looking forward to hosting our 11th Annual Pony Up for the Kids Fundraiser at Arlington Park Racecourse on July 13th. This event will be a lot of fun and help raise money for IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. Please join us to make a lot of money betting on the horses and to support a wonderful cause. Click
HERE  for more information and to register.

I hope everyone continues to have a great summer.

Marc

CHICAGOLAND GM BREAKFAST
On June 13th, Sara Kearney hosted IHLA's bi-monthly Chicagoland Council of Hotel General Managers Breakfast Meeting at NoMI Lounge at Park Hyatt Chicago. Attendees enjoyed networking and a delicious breakfast spread (the homemade cinnamon rolls did not disappoint) and heard from keynote speaker: Alderman Tom Tunney, 44th Ward. Alderman Tunney discussed several topics including the importance of teamwork, exceptional service, and attention to detail in the hotel industry and attentiveness to the local community. He emphasized that increasing wages is not the answer and he will continue to support our industry. The Alderman also answered questions regarding business and happenings in and around Wrigleyville.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
Legislative Update
The Illinois General Assembly adjourned on May 31st without passing a budget out of both chambers. With the 2017 fiscal year ending on June 30th, Governor Bruce Rauner called both the House and Senate in for a Special Session on June 21st. It is expected that the Special Session will continue until when/if a budget agreement can be reached.

During the entire budget process, IHLA continues to lobby the General Assembly on our key message:  Investment in Illinois' growing visitor industry translates into a huge Return on Investment for the State. And, any delay or reduction in tourism funding should simply not be an option for lawmakers as it would have a direct, immediate negative impact on hotel occupancy, tax receipts, etc.

The budget process and inability of the General Assembly to agree on a balanced budget has stymied action on many of the other pieces of legislation that IHLA has been working on. IHLA has been promoting SB 852 (Theater Tax Credit), which did pass both the Senate and the House. SB 852 provides that the amount of tax credits awarded are increased from $2M to $4M in FY2017. SB 852 has been sent to the Governor for signature.

Another key piece of legislation impacting the hotel industry that did narrowly pass, against opposition from the business community, is an increase in the minimum wage in Illinois. The legislation creates a new two-tiered system phase-in increase based on the workers' age and experience.

The legislation increases the minimum wage for employees 18 years or older or 18 years and younger with more than 650 hours of work to $9.00 per hour effective January 1, 2018; $10 per hour effective January 1, 2019; $11.25 per hour effective January 1, 2020; $13.00 per hour effective January 1, 2021; and $15.00 per hour effective January 1, 2022.

It further provides that the minimum wage for employees younger than 18 years with less than 650 hours of work be increased to $8.00 effective January 1, 2018; $8.50 effective January 1, 2019; $9.25 effective January 1, 2020; $10.50 effective January 1, 2021; and $12.00 effective January 1, 2022.

The minimum wage increase bill is headed to the Governor's desk for action where it is debatable whether or not the Governor will sign the bill. In the past, the Governor has stated that any minimum wage increase must be tied to his "turn around" agenda.
