IHMs "reach out" to Haiti in 1992!

Following the 1992, Tri–IHM (Monroe, MI, Scranton, PA, and Immaculata, PA) commemoration of the 100th

anniversary of the death of Mother Theresa Maxis, it seemed timely and imperative to accept Haiti and her people as the outreach project for the 1995 Tri-IHM Sesquicentennial celebration (150th Anniversary of the

IHM founding) .

The primary purpose of Haiti Outreach centered on providing financial support to an indigenous Haitian congregation of women religious involved in the field of education. The Little Sisters of St. Therese of the Child Jesus (psst) were chosen. They are the first indigenous congregation of women religious in Haiti.

(Each month, we will continue to highlight some aspect of our Haitian outreach,)

Mother Theresa Maxis (IHM Foundress)

was of Haitian descent.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Our love for God is expressed in our love for our neighbor. Based on Scripture, our Catholic tradition teaches us that love of neighbor is two pronged. It expresses itself in charity and in social action. This is often referred to as the “Two Feet of Love in Action.” The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have produced the following video to help us more clearly see that our love for our neighbor must wed charitable action to social action if we are going to be effective disciples of Jesus.

Left foot, right foot

We often refer to these “two feet” as “charity” and “justice.” Here is a simple definition of each. Charity addresses an immediate need. You may have noticed the corporal works of mercy which were featured in the video. “Justice” identifies the root causes of the problem that created the need and seeks to find solutions to these problems by supporting changes to institutions or to political structures.
