During his 1 hour webinar on Tuesday April 5, Dr. Shawn Meirovici discussed the use of cannabis in sport! Once again, during the most recent summer Olympic games, the world witnessed controversy surrounding the use of cannabis as a performance enhancing drug. Robin Williams is famously quoted as saying "the only way marijuana is performance enhancing is if there is a big Hershey bar at the finish line". Cannabis has been banned by the world anti-doping agency since 2004 but the question of it being a real performance enhancer is still debated. In this webinar we looked at the science surrounding cannabis and its relevance in sport.

Faculty Feature | Dr. Fiona Smulders

“The main takeaway from the Human Anatomy class I teach is that once you understand how the body works and gain a deeper connection to your own body, the answers for how to support health and wellness will be more clear. With my Herbal Medicine class, plants themselves are teachers, and once you gain an understanding and respect for working with them, the knowledge and wisdom gained is continual."

We asked Fiona what she loves about teaching her courses and what she loves about IHN:

“I love those 'ah-ha' moments when I can see in the students that something has clicked and a deeper awareness and understanding of the material, or just life in general, has occurred. When I see that spark of excitement and passion to keep learning, I know I've done my job. I love the community at IHN. It feels like the IHN crew is a part of my extended family."

Teaching at IHN since 2018
Vancouver and Online PT campuses
Currently teaching: Herbal Medicine, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Herbal Pharmacology & Plant Based Medicine Making Intensive

As the weather shifts, so too does our opportunity to incorporate cleansing rituals into our everyday habits. In a March 16, 2022 article (4 minute read), author Devon Barrow shares three concrete detoxification incorporations, which include the use of supplements, hydration increase, and nutrient-dense foods. Each address the root cause and the channels of elimination like the kidneys, liver, intestines, lymphatic system, lungs, and skin. “[While] much of the hype around cleansing is connected to short-term programs, their ‘quick fix’ nature tends to dissipate over time”. This article recommends a favourite of IHN students, alumni, faculty and staff: Udo’s Oil!
