Linda Bazinet Shares Material From Her New Con Ed Course

Join us Tuesday May 2, 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT for a 1 hour webinar as Linda Bazinet explains the answer to Why Is This Mouse Fat? Control of appetite and energy balance is complex. However, the fat mouse has a simple problem—it is unable to synthesize the hormone leptin. We will look at the history of leptin and it’s role in regulating our appetite and body weight. We will also look at ghrelin which in many ways is opposite to leptin. In fact, ghrelin is known as the “hunger hormone”. In addition, we will look at other hormones that are involved in appetite and energy balance including the digestive hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). The key role of the appetite center in the hypothalamus will also be discussed.

Join Dr. Jacqueline Cooper, as she highlights simple, straightforward strategies for balancing immune activity to optimize an effective response. Seasonal allergies are a sign certain elements of a person's immune system are overactive, while other aspects are weak. Caution must be exercised when attempting to "strengthen the immune system"; as you certainly would not want to further "strengthen" the overactive components responsible for the development of allergy symptoms.

Key Topics:

• Elements of the immune system that are overactive in those suffering with allergies

• Why people with allergies may have a harder time fighting off a viral infection

• How gut bacteria influences immune function and the development of allergies

• Supplement strategies that can be employed to help balance immune activity for those with allergies

Laura Winges Co-op/Practicum Experience

Laura Winges lives/works between Toronto and the Big Apple. She had her sights on connecting with two NDs in the heart of Manhattan, and we did just that. Through a process exclusive to IHN, Laura landed a role with her top choice, Dr. Lana Butner of Dr. Lana Wellness. When graduating students make themselves invaluable, they inevitably get hired on. Laura had "plan A", and that was a determination to get into a good clinic, and start earning professional experience. Laura was hired to continue in her role developing Dr. Lana's social media with the growing potential of expanding her presence at the clinic.

Laura shared, "Dr. Lana is a popular Naturopath and Acupuncturist who practices out of New York City and has an amazing following. I research, write, and shoot content for her! It's a great role to build my experience. You can see my work here Dr. Lana's IG. I was recently on a creative development trip with Dr. Lana's clinic to San Francisco. The photoshoot was for Dr. Lana and her well-known functional nutritionist, Lindley Wells. I am so grateful for the experience! A large portion of my Co-op was remote, making the work flexible to fit my schedule, but I had the pleasure of spending time in the acupuncture office working with Dr. Lana, her team, and patients. Being with Dr. Lana exposed me to what needs to be done to have successful practice with optimal patient outcomes. She has a relentless focus on root cause and applies various modalities found within the wellness space. I learned a lot about the benefits of acupuncture and cupping too! It was very exciting and inspiring!"

Laura was in IHN's Online Eastern program and is excited for her convocation next week, on May 6!

Are you confused by best before, sell by and use by dates? Many misunderstand current food labels, but are they increasing food waste? In a November 18, 2022 article (3 minute read), Jennifer Taylor, a food and nutrition professor at University of Prince Edward Island, shared, “About seven per cent of food waste in Canada is from consumers throwing products away prematurely”. She added, “While the work to make the meaning of the dates clearer is welcome, it would be better if the dates were removed entirely for some foods.” What are your thoughts? Should we remove some "best by date" food labels?

Thanks to the fibre and protein content of chickpeas, you won't see the crazy spike and resultant crash in energy that you will get from chippies or other processed treats. You can easily eat them as a blood-sugar balancing snack or use them as a topper for your favourite salad. We recommend this Sweet & Salty Roasted Chicpeas by IHN graduate, Caitlin Iles.
