Dr. Shawn Meirovici Shares Material From His Con Ed Course

Join us on Tuesday April 5 at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT for a 1 hour webinar as Dr. Shawn Meirovici ND discusses the use of cannabis in sport! Once again, during the most recent summer Olympic games, the world witnessed controversy surrounding the use of cannabis as a performance enhancing drug. Robin Williams is famously quoted as saying "the only way marijuana is performance enhancing is if there is a big Hershey bar at the finish line". Cannabis has been banned by the world anti-doping agency since 2004 but the question of it being a real performance enhancer is still debated. In this webinar we look at the science surrounding cannabis and its relevance in sport.

Young Chef Yianni Masters Banana Bread

What’s more heartening than holistic cooking? Learning that your children (and the younger generation) have the same passion! Yianni (pictured above) is a 4-year-old with his own restaurant and cafe! We asked what his favourite thing about cooking was, he said, "Cooking!!" Both his parents are advocates of teaching children about nutritious food and how to prepare them. If ever they are cooking something Yianni cannot participate in, he will stand by imitating every move they make. The answer to his opinion on healthy food, "Brocolli! Broccoli, can you hear me?" You really like broccoli? “It makes me strong.”

We learned about Yianni's kitchen talents after his father had participated in IHN's Student Clinic. Elizabeth Papadopoulos gave him his IHN apron. He loves wearing it around the house, when engaged in non-cooking tasks, because "it's so much fun. I like the colour and the sun.”

Yianni is focused on banana bread here. He knows the recipe so well that he even corrects his mom when she is the one at the helm of baking. Cooking both real, and imaginary foods, he is always excited to cook for guests in his family’s home, especially breakfast "'cause it's fun for me to cook eggs." Are eggs your favourite? "Yes, because I get to smash them! Breakfast eggs are great!" When we thanked him for his time, Yianni let us know, "But there’s so much more I want to tell you!”

Digital "Print" Material For Potential Students

Every year, we would meet potential students at amazing consumer health events like Toronto's Total Health Show, Whole Life Expo and Vancouver's Wellness Show and CanFit Pro. And every year, we would hand out our latest full colour brochures. We spend an awful long time making them as distinct, bold, beautiful and delicious as the field of holistic nutrition, and by extension our students and graduates. Brochures are now only digital, so if you still have yours as a potential student, it might now be an IHN collector's item! The 2022-2023 edition includes information on the Holistic Nutrition movement, a Program Overview, Admission Requirements, Careers, our current Rules and Regulations, our updated Curriculum, Tuition and Fees. It's a great resource. Use it to review, so that when you attend a Program Advising session you are able to articulate a full suite of questions you want answered.

Colleen Uses Supercharged Foods To Fuel Her Day

If any of you have had the pleasure of connecting with Colleen Smith, you know that she is a no holds barred superhero, assisting everyone with intensity. She loses sleep when she can't find resolutions to situations. One of her favourite simple salads, to give her that loving-kindness edge, is a Beet Salad. Beets, carrot, almonds, apples, coriander, fresh squeezed lemon and olive oil make a perfect quick working-lunch to have on campus. As a foodie and trained chef, Colleen has always liked beets. She says they can "tastily be used in so many ways, with a bonus of being a good source of iron." In fact, after attending and graduating from IHN, she started to eat beets more often. She plans on continuing to plant beets every year in her garden. Colleen says, “If they had it, I would get Beet Lattes all the time from Starbucks!”

A review of recent scientific literature found that our endocrine systems have been impacted by toxic overload. In a March 30, 2022 article (5 minute read), the authors relay findings from their research. One of their conclusions substantiate IHN’s teachings in hormonal regulation: “[Endocrine] disruptors can also alter pathways, including those of the thyroid gland, which are also involved in stress control, immunity and metabolism”. Highlighted amongst these is Bisphenol A (BPA), which is a component in our plastic usage and binds to estrogen receptors. Globally, future studies are expected to study genetic and epigenetic impacts of chemical endocrine disruptors.

Aloe vera juice is a thick, sticky liquid found in the flesh of the plant’s leaf. The aloe vera plant is a succulent that grows abundantly in tropical climates, originating in the Arabian Peninsula. Used for centuries for its medicinal properties, all parts of the plant, including the gel and juice, are used in skin care and digestive health. The juice has a mild flavour that mixes easily into smoothies and is an excellent source of Vitamins A, C, and E, beta-carotene, calcium, folic acid, and magnesium. We recommend this Immune-boosting Vitamin C Packed & Powered Lemonade by IHN graduate Stephanie Tari.
