2020 IHN Graduate, Kathryn Matheson, was asked to participate in her home town's recent World of Choices event that gave more than 165 students in Grade 7 and 8 a glimpse into the day-to-day experiences of a variety of careers. She called IHN to let us know, and as it happened, Agnes Merski an April 2023 graduating student with some Co-op hours left to do, created for Kathryn, a teen-friendly, teen-fun recipe card for Mood Lifting Energy Balls!

Kathryn shares, "I mainly talked with the students about the importance of nutrition to both their physical and mental health. We chatted about our “desert island food” and they offered some neat questions and ideas. I explained to them that my educational and career trajectory was varied, and that I found nutrition more recently and followed my passion. I wanted them to know that not everyone’s career path is linear, and that it is okay to try different things along the way. I also talked to them about breathing, and asked them to evaluate where their breath lands when they breathe in. In the time I had, I introduced how our breath can balance the nervous system when we are feeling stressed or anxious about something at school or at home. I gave them a mini Qigong lesson! We stood up together and did “Shake The 9 Gates”. I cycled through five groups in 20 minute intervals. Yikes!"

Let us know if you are engaged in the local or global community spreading the word on holistic nutrition!

Neurogenesis, the growth and development of new neurons in the brain, primarily the hippocampus, contributes to brain function. This process decreases with age; however, we can support neurogenesis. In an October 14, 2022 article (5 minute read), Margaret Littman explains, “…the best way to maintain the brain’s plasticity is to learn something new. Every single day. It doesn’t matter what it is, but it does matter that it is new, because it is about the process, not the product.” In addition to trying new things, visit the article to learn how diet and reducing stress improves brain function.

Pasta and zucchini noodles each gets lots of love, but are thought of almost exclusively. After being short on both chickpea spaghetti, and on zucchinis to make an entire meal out of either one, Caroline combined both with her favourite pesto sauce and voila, 50/50 pesto pasta was born. We recommend this 50/50 pesto pasta by IHN graduate, Caroline Young.
