Rachna Modi's Co-op/Practicum Experience

We have hundreds of rewarding and ongoing work/learn placements with Rachna's being no less so! As part of IHN's Applied Holistic Nutrition Diploma Program, all students must complete a minimum of 140 hours with a professional in the field. IHN's internships/externships are designed to allow students to apply the knowledge they have earned, in real-world applications. Rachna Modi, is a part-time student at IHN's Mississauga campus, who recently completed her practicum with The Homeschooling Learning Pod.

The Homeschooling Learning Pod is catered towards children who learn best in-person, with smaller class sizes, and hands-on activities. They can explore their interests, become independent thinkers, speak and ask what is on their mind, and become equipped with tools needed to be self-sustaining. The model is not unlike the Waldorf or Montessori platform. They study math, English, science, social studies, music, art and of course holistic food preparation for littles! We are starting them early at the Pod! Self- expression, meditation, and exercise such as yoga are on the curriculum. The Homeschooling Learning Pod takes a holistic approach to education, and as an early childhood educator, Rachna knew this was going to be the perfect experience for her.

Kids can be in the kitchen 2-3 times per week, not only learning cooking techniques, but also the nutritional background on each ingredient and their corresponding nutrients. Some foods Rachna guided the children in making were a vegetable pilaf made from scratch, coconut milk straight from the coconut, herbed and spiced mung bean pancakes, and chunky corn soup. On Social Study days, the children learned about cultures from around the world, immersing themselves by making the food, exploring the music, and understanding traditions.

After graduating from IHN, Rachna plans on doing something similar to what she participated in at her placement. Her experience showed her where public education is lacking. Rachna believes that children should be taught about their roots, and be aware and understanding of other worldviews. She is aiming to work with young students and their parents, with a focus on a holistic lifestyle and nutrition basics that can be used throughout their lives.

In the field of nutrition and health, there has always been an abundance of new and ever-changing trends. A February 28, 2022 article (3 minute read), explored the top 10 nutrition trends in 2022 by summarizing interviews with over 100 nutrition experts. After reading, you’ll understand how society currently views food in the aftermath of a global pandemic. For example, Nevena Banov explains on diet myths that “social media has become the number one source of information for many people, leaving many of them confused and misinformed.” With educated holistic nutritionists being the answer, the public’s need for qualified practitioners has never been higher.

Composed of 91% water, this melon lives up to its name. Watermelon originated in southern Africa, and is a relative of cantaloupe, zucchini, cucumber, and pumpkin. Aside from being hydrating, and refreshing, watermelon is a great source of fibre, vitamin C, K, and lycopene, an antioxidant that also gives this fruit its red colour. Watermelons require plenty of water and full sun to grow, which takes 2 to 3 months. Try this refreshing Watermelon Mint Cooler recipe by IHN graduate Hailey Rose Malkin this summer.
