Dealing With Food Intolerances & Sensitivities

Pictured above, Kathrin Brunner was captured teaching a Nutrition And The Environment lecture to students mid-class. In this session, she is discussing common food sensitizers and practical substitutions. She is a pro at taking common issues encountered in every day life and creating an actionable plan designed to help you thrive. Kathrin is a joyful educator, passionate about our planet and holistic living! Spend some time around her and you'll feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of your day!

The focus of this course is on how a healthy environment is intimately linked with human health. Students learn how environmental toxins in the air, food, water, and soil supply are intrinsically linked to their bodies. Students begin the course with a detailed study of the soil, biodiversity, and the ecological footprint. They learn about sustainable approaches to agriculture, the soil foodweb, and how organic agriculture is regulated. Additional topics include food processing methods and additives, biodynamic agriculture, animal farming, food safety, electromagnetic pollution, and more.

Three Beginnings for 2022

Two IHN team greats are moving on to the next step of their holistic journeys, with one moving in to make them proud, and fill their shoes!

After 5 amazing years with us, IHN 2016 graduate, Hannah Rauhanen (Ottawa Campus Manager, Program Advisor, and Holistic Food Preparation Coordinator) is transitioning to work as a Health and Wellness Marketing Freelancer. Hannah was an integral and always cheerful design partner in launching and producing the "IHN This Week" and "IHN Weekly Digest" e-newsletters. We'll remain in touch as she builds her client base and may well work together in the future!

For the past year, in the midst of our evolving academic and professional landscape, IHN 2017 graduate, Amanda Dias (co-producer of IHN's Co-op Placement and Continuing Education programming) will be starting 2022 earning her Yoga certification in Bali! She'll add that to her long-standing Pilates instructor expertise and meditation practices, with a good chance that she'll co-own a wellness studio in Oakville that we look forward to hearing more about and joining her as students!

Both Hannah and Amanda shared the value that student interactions held, and the relationships they both nurtured in their respective roles. We are not alone in saying that Hannah and Amanda's passion, expertise, friendship and care for the community will be missed.

Theodore Papadopooulos is well on his way into taking over their roles, but he is certainly no newcomer to IHN. He's been with us for 7 years, working part time, first, as our "showman" who set up and facilitated booths at Toronto's consumer health shows like Total Health, Green Living, CanFitPro and Whole Life Expo. From administrator to program advisor, and now the full time talent taking over for Hannah and Amanda, he can be contacted by email at [email protected], or by phone at the Toronto campus 416-386-0940 throughout the week! Reach out, he'd love to connect!
New YearNew Semester

Welcoming returning and new students is almost upon us! Current students rolling into the January semester will have had a much needed break while new students will imbue IHN with energy that matches our own. Students embarking on their holistic journey is one of our favourite times in the academic year. Every January, the palpable energetics are in the air, and they are inspiring for everyone. We're kicking things off with Nutrition and Health: The Fundamentals, Ayurveda: Mind/Body Healing, Nutrition and The Environment and Biological Chemistry. These courses hold a foundational breadth and range of knowledge, that integrate well, as the principles in holistic nutrition are revealed.

In-class students will begin their classes in the virtual space, for the January 2022 semester at all of IHN's campus locations. Our path to re-opening our campuses once again changed at the recent onset of concern from an ever-evolving pandemic landscape. We are hopeful that our patience to resume in-class, in-person learning soon outdoes the protracted time we have been forced to be apart. With that said, our exclusive online program has been an extraordinary success! After all of our intense development by IHN administration and faculty to make it mirror the in-class program, we celebrated the rise of the online "campus" culture! Feedback about the real-time experience has been beyond our expectations.

Fats That Heal, Protect & Sustain Optimal Health

For the last few decades, we have been advised to avoid dietary fat as a way to reduce chronic disease risk. This is undoubtedly the worst nutritional advice of our time. Anita Sauve CNP discussed the importance of healing fats. They are not only necessary for optimal health but they are essential! Learn which fats we need more of in our diet, where to get them and their functions. Become empowered with knowledge that will increase your energy, brain health, skin and hair quality and reduce disease.
Our Inner Critic – The Connection Between Self-Compassion, Emotional Resiliency & Mental Health

Research has found that critical self-talk is related to lower empathy and higher rates of anxiety. Kathrin Brunner CNP describedthe ‘Inner Critic’ and how to overcome it through the practice of self-compassion. The ability to be kind to ourselves leads to improved emotional resiliency and better interpersonal connections. The lecture will equip you with self-assessment tools as well as several practical exercises.
Optimal Plant Based Eating Approaches

Whole unprocessed plant foods of excellent quality provide bioavailable nutrients that fuel and balance our health optimally. Jacqueline Steinert CNP shared what an optimal plant-based plate looks like, critical macros and micros to incorporate into the protocol, and why we must focus on whole plant foods in order to achieve plant based benefits including improved metabolic measures in health and disease, encompassing cognitive and physical wellbeing!
As we become more eco-conscious, we pass down what we have learned to future generations. In an August 16, 2021 article (4 minute read), Sarah Robertson-Barnes shared that “[Sustainable] living shows our children, in a tangible way, that individual actions have collective impact. We aim to teach them to be active and engaged citizens who want to make a better world for everyone”. This article provides opportunities for children to learn some principles of sustainable agriculture: reducing the number of single use plastics, walking to school and one plant-based meal during the week.

For thousands of years, cinnamon has been included in meals for its therapeutic benefits. This warming spice has anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants that help protect the body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It can help lower blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of heart disease. Cinnamaldehyde, one of the active components in cinnamon, possesses anti-fungal and antibacterial characteristics, beneficial for reducing infections. The aroma of cinnamon instantly takes one to a happy place. Try this comforting Sweet Cinnamon Donuts recipe by IHN graduate Corin Ames.
