During his 1 hour webinar on Tuesday, June 14 Paul Demeda presented on how the idea that what you eat affects how you feel, is accepted by many people – and also well supported with research. However, food and nutrients are rarely considered as a key strategy for supporting mental health. Mental health issues are predictably an ever-increasing problem in today’s world. The mainstream medical approach has issues with ineffectiveness and unpleasant side effects – which leaves many sufferers turning to the holistic approach for better solutions.

Harnessing Plant Power In Practice & At Home

Pictured above, Corrie Rabbe was captured teaching a Herbal Medicine lecture to students mid-class. She is incredible at taking complex information and delivering it in a way that is clear and simple to understand, regardless of the context or their learning style. She is a self proclaimed "food-junkie, travel addict, nature-loving, science nerd with a passion for helping people transform their lives and bodies." Corrie blends her knowledge of hard science, natural systems, and real life experience to create programs that empower her clients. Her own health journey led her to IHN where she earned her CNP.

The focus of this course is on the use of herbal medicines in common conditions and to instruct the students in how to safely and effectively integrate herbal medicine into their future practice. Students learn the philosophy, roots and concepts of traditional and medical herbalism. They become familiar with how to make herbal formulas, and dosage recommendations for common conditions they are likely to encounter as a practitioner, and understand herbal actions for all the main body systems. Additional topics include recognizing multifunctional medicinal plants in the local environment, infusing topical applications, using local herbs as a substitute for commercial medicinal preparations, and more.

Faculty Feature | Dr. Alex Dragan

"I want my students to understand that in order to prevent or reverse disease processes you must first understand the foundations of health as well as the pathophysiology of dis-ease. We sometimes skip over the basics because we love learning about the newest supplement or superfood. Oftentimes, going back to the basics of a healthy lifestyle is all that is necessary for true wellbeing."

We asked Alex what she loves about IHN and teaching her course:

"I love teaching Preventive Health Care because the teachings are the foundations of optimal health and wellness. Preventative health was the medicine of the past and I believe it is the medicine of the future. People are now searching for the root cause of their ailments and empowering the students with this knowledge to help their future clients is an incredible thing."

"I love that IHN is leading people to a career in helping others thrive through lifestyle and nutrition shifts. "Let food be thy medicine" is the famous quote Hippocrates once said and I believe this holds true to today. IHN is giving so many students the knowledge in order to allow food to be thy medicine."

The 5 people closest to you are as essential as food and water. A February 14, 2022 article (3 minute read), reveals the research of Psychologist and Professor Robin Dunbar, on human inner circles. He learned that, because families are smaller in size today, it’s important to cultivate deeper friendships. Loneliness kills, according to Dunbar, so he suggests focusing on your “inner 5”, of kin and friends, with whom we can maintain stable social relationships. Dunbar, believes that “friendship is the best predictor of your chances of surviving from this moment into the future.” Holistic Nutritionists might add that, survival essentials also include dark chocolate and avocado toast.

The sweet potato is a starchy root vegetable belonging to the Morning Glory variety of plants. Despite it’s name, it is a distant relative of the potato, and is often mistaken for the yam. This plant matures in two to nine months, depending on the climate, and prefers warmer temperatures. Starchy, sweet potatoes are extremely high in vitamins A and C, fibre, and water, making them a great alternative to potatoes and bread, as seen in this Sweet Potato Turkey Slider recipe by IHN graduate Alaina Yvon-Moreau.
