Carol On Call, Anna On Campus

Carol Bloemen (right) graduated from IHN in 2003 and went into private practice, being one of the first coaches in Canada, trained in Metabolic Balance. She joined the IHN administrative team in 2012. She recently transitioned her role to focus on IHN special projects and will come on back on board when IHN calls for her expertise. For 9 years she was an essential part of administration as one of our lead Program Advisors in Toronto. Carol was on hiatus for a short time in 2019 then returned to hold the position of interim Student Administrator this past winter and spring, while IHN sought a candidate to fill the role. Enter Anna Christensen!

She joined the administration team in April 2021 and works from the Toronto campus as Head Administrator, Program Advisor. Anna supports students attending the North York campus and IHN Online Eastern. A little about our newest administrative team member:

While studying at IHN, Anna fell in love with the course Ayurveda: Mind/Body Healing. It inspired her to further her education at the California College of Ayurveda where she is presently studying for 3 years. She will earn the title of Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist. Anna has also been teaching Hot Yoga and Pilates in the Toronto Beaches neighbourhood for over 5 years. Her practice will be informed by the immersive experience that this natural system of medicine offers, as one of the world's oldest (and increasingly evidence based) traditions of healing.

Anna can be reached on Monday and Thursday 9:00 am-4:30 pm Eastern.

An Excerpt From IHN's Nutrition & Mental Health Con Ed Course!

On Monday, June 21, 2021 IHN hosted a 1 hour webinar as Paul Demeda CNP shared how nutrition affects mental health. The idea that what you eat affects how you feel, is accepted by significant numbers of the public and healthcare professionals alike. It’s a pillar of mental health that is well supported by current research. However, food and nutrients are rarely considered as a key strategy for supporting cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. Mental health issues are predictably an ever-increasing problem in today’s world. The mainstream medical approach has issues with ineffectiveness and unpleasant side effects, which leaves many sufferers turning to the holistic approach for better solutions.

Nutrition Education To Those Facing Barriers

Nova Scotia is Canada’s front runner when it comes to food insecurity and one National food delivery company has found a way to feed the community while educating at the same time. The non-profit organization provides free programs and services to individuals facing inclusion and community participation barriers, including Chef-led cooking classes and wellness initiatives. Co-founder and CEO, Tova Sherman, told Global News in a June 2, 2021 article (3 minute read), “Hello Reach Program Delivers Nutrition Education To Those Facing Barriers In Halifax”, that “We’re always coming up with what’s needed and we believe no one should fall into the dark.”

From baked goods to barbecue, cinnamon is used as a sweet and warming spice with a fragrant, comforting aroma. It comes from the dried inner bark of evergreen trees native to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), and also cultivated in South America and the West Indies. In addition to its wide culinary uses, cinnamon protects the body from harmful pathogens and free radicals with its anti-microbial properties and antioxidants. It is highly regarded for its ability to improve sensitivity to insulin and its ability to lower blood sugar levels. For a balanced breakfast, whip up a batch of Cinnamon Oatmeal Pancakes from IHN graduate Yvette Nagy.
