During her 1 hour webinar on Tuesday May 2, Linda Bazinet explains the answer to Why Is This Mouse Fat? Control of appetite and energy balance is complex. However, the fat mouse has a simple problem—it is unable to synthesize the hormone leptin. We will look at the history of leptin and it’s role in regulating our appetite and body weight. We will also look at ghrelin which in many ways is opposite to leptin. In fact, ghrelin is known as the “hunger hormone”. In addition, we will look at other hormones that are involved in appetite and energy balance including the digestive hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). The key role of the appetite center in the hypothalamus will also be discussed.

Nutritional Assessment & Protocol Development in Symptomatology Pt. I

Pictured above, Tahlia Sage was captured teaching a Nutritional Symptomatology Pt I lecture to students mid-class. In this session, she is discussing the importance of metabolic imbalances and their role in human health and disease. She is a pro at providing real world examples by taking her extensive clinical experience and breaking it down in a way that is relatable and understandable. Tahlia exudes a passion for teaching, imbuing her lectures with her contagious warmth and sense of humor. All who know Tahlia can attest to her unfailingly genuine care for her students!

The focus of this course is to gain an understanding of clinical assessment methods to identify nutritional imbalances by interpreting symptoms and their relationships to nutritional deficiencies and excesses. Students learn how to prepare formal protocols to restore nutritional balance and optimal health. Topics such as heavy metals, amino acids, digestive imbalances, liver detox, glandular imbalances, and many more are thoroughly covered throughout the course with an emphasis on biochemical individuality. This is a concept that proposes we all have widely unique needs that impact our health, in ways that may not work for others, and vice versa. Students are taught how to find these key, critical factors of influence.

These are not your average leftovers! Archaeologists have discovered what may be the burnt leftovers of a 70,000-year-old flatbread, possibly making it the world’s oldest cooked meal! In a November 23, 2022 article (3 min read), Dr. Ceren Kabukcu, an archaeobotanist, shares, “We present evidence for the first time of soaking and pounding pulse seeds by both Neanderthals and early modern humans…We also find evidence of ‘mixtures’ of seeds included in food items and argue that there were some unique preferences for specific plant flavours.” As foodies, we are even closer to our ancestors than we think!
