Connecting With The Herbs That Unite Us

Pictured above, students were captured in a recent guided Wild Herb & Weeds Walk, as part of IHN’s Herbal Medicine course, with one of our expert and beloved Herbal Medicine Instructors. We are sure most of you recognize nature's sunshine in human form, on earth, Eva Cabaca! The daylong adventure is designed to allow students to take theory acquired from their class lectures and expand their knowledge in the hands-on, real-world experience. They are asked to identify wild herbs and weeds in natural settings to test their visual memory and deepen their understanding of the often ignored medicinal properties of local botanicals. Suddenly, all around us we see free food and medicine! Students begin to ethically and safely forage for plants that are present in their own backyard as well as clean (meaning, untouched by pesticides or other commercial chemicals) outdoor spaces. This is where the lambsquarters "weed" (an amaranth family member) regains respect.

When plants are in bloom IHN arranges the walks within the Toronto, Mississauga and Vancouver areas, where our in-class campuses are located. The walks are open to all of our students, regardless of the learning model they enjoy. Whether in-class or online, students can connect in beautiful outdoor spaces.
The Wild Herb & Weeds Walk is still an extension of the Herbal Medicine course and is an academic requirement that must be fulfilled to be eligible to graduate. IHN is beyond grateful and excited to have students become part of the IHN Family from all over the world since launching the exclusive Online Program in the fall of 2020.

In consideration of our students who are not in the cities where our campuses are located, and are unable to attend the walks, we created an In Lieu of Assignment. This assignment is a guide to establish the same theory to hands-on work for global students or even students who need to complete the walks during the colder months of the academic year. For this assignment students learn what is growing in their own backyard or in a local nursery and write a monograph of two common herbs or weeds in their geography. Students also have the option of completing an independently organized In Lieu of Report where they meet a Herbalist guide who takes them through a similar IHN walk. In all cases, whether walks, assignments or reports, herbs and weeds become tinctures, teas, infusions, salves or even a steamed side dish for dinner!

Short pull quotes (below) from students sharing their experience on behalf of their group:

Jerusha L (In-class): “The herb walk with Corrie was great! I was surprised at how many medicinal plants are right here in our backyard. Learning about plant medicine, and now knowing how accessible they are is inspiring for me and my health journey, because it reminds me how connected we really are to nature and how it has always supported us, allowing us to thrive as humans.”

Janet S (Online): “The Herb walk was amazing! Eva is extraordinarily knowledgeable with the herbs and explained their multiple medicinal properties to us in detail. She made it exciting to learn and gave us the opportunity to taste a few of them.”

Alicia M (Online): “One of the best experiences I've had. Since going on this herb walk every time I go for a walk or a hike, I look at the plants so differently now constantly trying to identify the plant in front of me and what they do. This walk brought me closer to nature and I loved it. Seeing everyone in person for the first time was such a thrill!”

For Jenn-Marie, Nothing Beats Homemade

Anyone taking IHN's in-class program in Vancouver, or our Online classes from the Pacific Time Zone, knows Jenn-Marie and her radical passion for helping others. One of her favourite go-to lunch foundations is chicken bone broth. She has been making now for almost 8 years. She first learned about bone broth while studying Traditional Chinese Medicine, and decided it to try it after learning about its nutrient density and healing properties. Jenn-Marie shared, "After I tried it, I could feel the difference in my body, but you have to focus on the best ingredients and process". Chicken bones, celery, onion, carrot, shitake mushroom, turmeric, and ginger makes for her standard bone broth recipe, but she enjoys customizing it for variations on a theme. "Once I discovered you could add things to it, it became a staple in my diet." Even though Vancouver has an abundance of incredible shops and restaurants where prepared bone broth is easily accessible, Jenn-Marie always makes it herself. She loves homemade cooking as it's fun, ensures quality control, allows flexibility with recipes, and keeps good food energetics!

Cacao powder is milled through a fermentation process using the beans of the cacao tree. It has a more bitter taste compared to its popular counterpart, cocoa powder, also from the same tree, but is more nutrient dense. High in non-heme iron, magnesium, fibre, and protein, cacao powder makes a healthy, low glycemic alternative to sweetened chocolate, as we found in IHN graduate Carmen Dun’s Triple Raw Chocolate Cheezecake recipe.
