A Little Boost With A Big Effect

Having been involved in athletics throughout his whole life, and initially garnering an interest in nutrition for its application in sport, anything holistic and natural that can boost performance attracts Theodore's (Theo) attention. In the summer of 2018 while earning his degree in Mental Health at the University of Toronto, Theo first discovered pine pollen at a booth while working a trade show for IHN in Vancouver. He learned how pine pollen mimics male hormones, boosting performance, and additional anti-aging, anti-cancer, antiviral, and stem cell response activation, benefitting both men and women. Since then, while he doesn't harvest it himself, Theo has cycled his use of hand-picked, sustainably harvested, remote wild forest pine pollen, making it a staple in his smoothies and smoothie bowls.

Theodore is the Co-op Placements and Community Development Coordinator, and Program Advisor at IHN's North York Campus. He is an important part of the team at IHN—click and scroll to see Theodore's feature from August 19, 2021

Although it is important to eat the rainbow (no, not skittles!), green is often emphasized, whereas black is typically forgotten about and not associated with nutrition, health and wellness. Andrea Donsky’s blog post (5 minute read) explores the dark side of nutrition and why black is the new green. She explains how “many black foods are loaded with important nutrients, including pigments known as anthocyanins, which have been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.” Green food receives all the glory due to its antioxidant content; however, black foods are equally nutritious.

Cashews are a member of the tree nut family, native to south America. They are a source of healthy fat and plant-based protein, copper, magnesium and manganese. Today, many cultures include cashews in sauces, curries, and desserts. They have a naturally creamy texture and taste, creating a decadent touch to any dish. All parts of the cashew tree can be used, including the nut, fruit, seeds, and shells. We recommend this Decadent Cashew Cream recipe by IHN graduate Elissa Radocchia.
