During his 1 hour webinar on Tuesday, June 14, Paul Demeda presented on how the idea that what you eat affects how you feel, is accepted by many people – and also well supported with research. However, food and nutrients are rarely considered as a key strategy for supporting mental health. Mental health issues are predictably an ever-increasing problem in today’s world. The mainstream medical approach has issues with ineffectiveness and unpleasant side effects – which leaves many sufferers turning to the holistic approach for better solutions.

We Are Looking For More New Student Clinic Advisors!

Due to the popularity of this Co-op/Practicum, we are seeking more talented CNPs to join the clinic as Student Clinic Advisors (SCAs). Please send your resume (showing years in practice) with a short note of interest to IHN's Student Clinic Coordinator, Inder Gharial at [email protected]

Inder will share with you the qualifications needed to participate along with the process and partnership with IHN. In 2018, when we revamped how IHN’s Student Clinic ran, we sought out six tremendous CNPs who served as IHN’s first SCAs. They offer support for students, through their first experiences with clients. All of our SCAs are recognized as respected, deeply knowledgeable and committed to the profession. These mentors are there as a resource for participating students, to review all protocols before they are delivered to the clients. Although most of our SCAs have been doing clinical work for over 10 years, we always encourage graduates who have been practicing clinically for a minimum of 2 years to reach out if they are interested in becoming a student mentor. A huge thank you to all of our past and current SCAs!

Pictured above, Corrie Rabbe was captured teaching a Herbal Medicine lecture to students mid-class. She is incredible at taking complex information and delivering it in a way that is clear and simple to understand, regardless of the context or their learning style. She is a self proclaimed "food-junkie, travel addict, nature-loving, science nerd with a passion for helping people transform their lives and bodies." Corrie blends her knowledge of hard science, natural systems, and real life experience to create programs that empower her clients. Her own health journey led her to IHN where she earned her CNP.

Corrie joined IHN's faculty in 2016—originally at IHN's Ottawa campus, and has now transitioned to teaching virtually. In addition to Herbal Medicine, Corrie teaches Nutrition & The Environment, Biological Chemistry, and Body Metabolism. She runs her own private fermentation workshops and herb walks. She sits on the board of directors for the Ottawa Herb Society.

We asked Corrie what the IHN Family might not know about her:

"My dad was a diplomat so I grew up going to international school where people spoke a lot of different languages and you often had to figure out how to explain things to people simply and clearly, so I've gotten the feedback from people, both from teaching and in my personal life, that I have a very clear way of explaining things while providing lots of detail. I also strangely enjoy public speaking. That was a long journey for me, I was very shy and quiet. It was a bit of a process to get there, but now I really enjoy it.

I'm a radio DJ on a community radio on CKCU 93.1 FM here in Ottawa, and I play music. My brain also retains a lot of information about music, so I have a biweekly show. I play punk rock, psychedelic rock, pretty heavy music actually. Most people are very surprised because it maybe doesn't quite fit with their image of me."

Join Corrie for a Herbal Medicine refresher which provides plenty of opportunity to deepen your connection with nature. It's always 50% off the regular course fee for all graduates.
Faculty Feature | Dr. Alex Dragan

"I want my students to understand that in order to prevent or reverse disease processes you must first understand the foundations of health as well as the pathophysiology of dis-ease. We sometimes skip over the basics because we love learning about the newest supplement or superfood. Oftentimes, going back to the basics of a healthy lifestyle is all that is necessary for true wellbeing."

We asked Alex what she loves about IHN and teaching her course:

"I love teaching Preventive Health Care because the teachings are the foundations of optimal health and wellness. Preventative health was the medicine of the past and I believe it is the medicine of the future. People are now searching for the root cause of their ailments and empowering the students with this knowledge to help their future clients is an incredible thing."

"I love that IHN is leading people to a career in helping others thrive through lifestyle and nutrition shifts. "Let food be thy medicine" is the famous quote Hippocrates once said and I believe this holds true to today. IHN is giving so many students the knowledge in order to allow food to be thy medicine."

The 5 people closest to you are as essential as food and water. A February 14, 2022 article (3 minute read), reveals the research of Psychologist and Professor Robin Dunbar, on human inner circles. He learned that, because families are smaller in size today, it’s important to cultivate deeper friendships. Loneliness kills, according to Dunbar, so he suggests focusing on your “inner 5”, of kin and friends, with whom we can maintain stable social relationships. Dunbar, believes that “friendship is the best predictor of your chances of surviving from this moment into the future.” Holistic Nutritionists might add that, survival essentials also include dark chocolate and avocado toast.

The sweet potato is a starchy root vegetable belonging to the Morning Glory variety of plants. Despite it’s name, it is a distant relative of the potato, and is often mistaken for the yam. This plant matures in two to nine months, depending on the climate, and prefers warmer temperatures. Starchy, sweet potatoes are extremely high in vitamins A and C, fibre, and water, making them a great alternative to potatoes and bread, as seen in this Sweet Potato Turkey Slider recipe by IHN graduate Alaina Yvon-Moreau.
