During her 1 hour webinar on Tuesday May 2, Linda Bazinet explains the answer to Why Is This Mouse Fat? Control of appetite and energy balance is complex. However, the fat mouse has a simple problem—it is unable to synthesize the hormone leptin. We will look at the history of leptin and it’s role in regulating our appetite and body weight. We will also look at ghrelin which in many ways is opposite to leptin. In fact, ghrelin is known as the “hunger hormone”. In addition, we will look at other hormones that are involved in appetite and energy balance including the digestive hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). The key role of the appetite center in the hypothalamus will also be discussed.

Inside The Associations Advocating For Our Profession

This will be a first. Both IONC and CANNP have had virtual open houses for the public and potential members to share what it is that they do within our industry. The content covered is broad with a focus on what the membership offers. What hasn't happened is a conversation and Q&A that is closed only to IHN students and graduates. IHN's Julia Rickert, in her role as a Professional Practice faculty member and Career Consultant invited the directors and decision makers from both associations to answer questions that are relevant to IHN graduating students and Certified Nutritional Practitioners working in the field.

Julia shared, "I managed a group called Networking Nutritionists for 4 1/2 years and saw many multiple threads develop asking about the necessity of either organization and what they actually do for our profession. I still get those questions from students and graduates who've been in the field for some time. Do they matter? What's the benefit? Is the yearly output of fees worthwhile? What's the difference between the two? What aren't they just one group? Questions around getting clients covered by extended health care benefits, regulation or recognition, the weight of the designations in practice and what's happening within our profession that all of us need to know. We'll hit the basics, for sure, but I want to set some things straight with what IONC and CANNP actually do for us and why IHN continues to partner with them."

The two separate Zoom calls won't be recorded for broad replay but will available upon request if IHN'ers can't make it there LIVE. The Q&A will be open for registrants questions. Try to be there for both!

"I'm growing a greener thumb in the garden. In my spare time, I care for a growing collection of food and medicinal herbs in my backyard. I'm passionate about creating a healthy ecosystem in my backyard: improving soil health, feeding the pollinators (hummingbirds, bees and butterflies) and nurturing biodiversity. These are not your average leftovers! Archaeologists have discovered what may be the burnt leftovers of a 70,000-year-old flatbread, possibly making it the world’s oldest cooked meal! In a November 23, 2022 article (3 min read), Dr. Ceren Kabukcu, an archaeobotanist, shares, “We present evidence for the first time of soaking and pounding pulse seeds by both Neanderthals and early modern humans…We also find evidence of ‘mixtures’ of seeds included in food items and argue that there were some unique preferences for specific plant flavours.” As foodies, we are even closer to our ancestors than we think!
