Research team uses AI to help deliver exercise to kids with autism

A U-M team led by Rebecca Hasson, Ph.D., associate professor of kinesiology, is using AI to make physical activity more accessible for children with autism. Building on their InPACT (Interrupting Prolonged Sitting with Activity) program, originally launched to promote short bursts of exercise in schools, the researchers adapted the initiative for home use during the pandemic. Now, with help from ChatGPT, they have rewritten instructions for over 130 exercise videos to better meet the needs of neurodivergent children—simplifying movements, enhancing clarity, and ensuring accessibility. The results of their work are published in Frontiers in Physiology.
