Embedding pharmacists as part of the health care team at U-M Health primary care clinics and community retail pharmacies has proven so effective in controlling blood pressure that the CDC is now replicating this model of care and expanding it to the southeastern U.S. Hae Mi Choe, Pharm.D., clinical professor of pharmacy, first developed the pharmacist-centric care model in 1999. Since then, the program has expanded to add pharmacists to U-M Health clinics and select Meijer pharmacies.

A new study by James Henderson, Ph.D., assistant research scientist, and team finds that for people with obesity who receive a weight management treatment (nutrition counseling, anti-obesity medications, bariatric surgery, etc.), the odds of losing 5% of their body weight or more in just a year ranged from 23% to 93%, depending on the type of treatment. But the study also suggests that most people with obesity aren’t getting weight-related care from their usual source of health care.
