July/August 2023
It is with great sorrow that we mourn the loss of IHPI member and long-time faculty colleague, physician, mentor and friend, Michael D. Fetters, M.D., M.P.H., M.A.

A caring and beloved family physician and renowned physician-scientist and published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles over the course of his 30-year medical career. Countless physicians and scholars around the globe have benefitted from his teaching and mentorship.
IHPI has cultivated several research networks to help promote interdisciplinary collaboration within the IHPI community, including the Aging Research Network, which connects a wide range of IHPI members doing work that impacts the lives of older adults. An Aging Research Networking Event will be held on Friday, September 29 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at NCRC and is open to all interested IHPI members – you can register here or contact Erica Solway for more information!

At a pivotal time for Medicaid health coverage for Americans with low incomes, the impacts of Michigan’s Medicaid expansion show very positive effects, as well as opportunities for continued improvements, according to a new report by the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation as part of its evaluation of the Healthy Michigan Plan. The program currently has about one million enrollees and was signed into law 10 years ago this September.
According to a new report produced for the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and led by Chad EIlimoottil, M.D., M.S., assistant professor of urology, between 11% and 17% of all health care appointments to evaluate symptoms or discuss treatment now take place virtually, depending on the type of insurance. Telehealth has especially helped the 1 in 5 Michiganders who have mental health care needs.

Four in five adults age 50 to 80 see the benefit of tests that can give an early warning that a person’s memory and thinking abilities have started to decline, according to a new report from the National Poll on Healthy Aging. And 60% think that healthcare providers should offer cognitive screening, in the form of brief memory tests, to all older adults annually.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizes an estimated 60,000-160,000 older adults in the U.S. each year. The first vaccines against it were recently approved by the FDA and recommended by the CDC, informed by a cost-effectiveness model created by David Hutton, Ph.D., M.S., professor of public health, and Lisa Prosser, Ph.D., M.S., professor of pediatrics. Hutton discusses their work in this Q&A.
