Akbar K. Waljee, M.D., M.Sc., professor of learning health sciences and internal medicine, has been appointed assistant dean for global health research in the Medical School. His role will extend beyond our borders as he oversees and fosters collaborations and partnerships at the international level. | |

Prashant Mahajan, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., has been appointed chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and William G. Barsan Collegiate Professor of Emergency Medicine in the U-M Medical School, effective July 1. Mahajan previously served as vice chair of the department and section chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. | | |
School of Information assistant professor Robin Brewer, Ph.D. received a 2024 Henry Russel award at the July Board of Regents meeting. The award recognizes U-M faculty members who have demonstrated an extraordinary record of accomplishment in scholarly research and/or creativity, as well as an excellent record of contributions as teachers. | |

Chad M. Brummett, M.D., professor of anesthesiology, and Lynae A. Darbes, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing, are among seven faculty named 2024 MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentors. The award was established in 2012 to recognize individuals who meet the highest standard for clinical and translational research mentorship. | |

IHPI’s “Understanding and Improving the U.S. Healthcare System” residential online course has been updated for the 2024–2025 academic year with 29 new videos and interviews. The course runs from October 6–November 17. IHPI members are welcome to use videos from the open version of the course in their teaching. | |

National and Michigan data show many think the government should have a leading role in covering the cost of caregiving. More than 1 in 4 people age 50 and older helps take care of at least one family member or friend who has a health issue or disability, a new National Poll on Healthy Aging finds. | | |
A new study led by Sean Esteban McCabe, Ph.D., M.S.W., M.A., professor of nursing, showed that since 2009, U.S. high school seniors have reported steep declines in medical use, misuse and availability of the three most commonly prescribed and misused controlled substances. | |
