Wait times for emergency hospitalization keep getting higher

A new Health Affairs study led by Alexander Janke, M.D., MHS, M.Sc., clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine, finds hospital “boarding” of patients in emergency departments has surged nationwide since mid-2020, with over 25% waiting over four hours for a bed and nearly 5% waiting over 24 hours, based on 46 million visits from 1,500 hospitals between 2017 and 2024.

Dementia’s broad reach: More than 1 in 4 families of older adults at risk for providing care

A new NIH-funded study led by Esther Friedman, Ph.D., research associate professor at the U-M Institute for Social Research, finds that about 26% of both households and immediate families of older adults include an individual with dementia—often requiring relatives to step into unexpected caregiving roles. This figure rises to 37% among extended families of adults 65 and older.
