REPORT: National Poll on Healthy Aging marks 5 years of elevating older adults' voices
In 2017, IHPI leadership, with instrumental support from AARP and Michigan Medicine, launched the National Poll on Healthy Aging (NPHA) to develop a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of adults aged 50-80 and their families to better inform health care research, policy, and practice. In celebration of the poll's first five years, a new report highlights the NPHA’s extraordinary impact and looks to the future of elevating the voices of older adults.

The Institute is seeking an enthusiastic faculty lead for the Telehealth Research & Policy Initiative. The ideal candidate will have a vision for the future of telehealth research and policy at IHPI and will build upon the successful work of the initiative to date.

The initiative aims to:
  • Catalyze and support multidisciplinary research on the impact of telehealth on access, cost, quality, and the patient experience.
  • Collectively disseminate the multitude of telehealth research by IHPI members in order to impact policy and improve healthcare delivery at Michigan Medicine and beyond.
A new study led by Chad Ellimoottil, M.D., M.S., assistant professor of urology and director of IHPI’s Telehealth Research Incubator, suggests that people in some states will be much more affected than others by restrictions on interstate telehealth. During the pandemic, all 50 states allowed out-of-state clinicians to perform telehealth visits with residents of other states, and the number of interstate telehealth visits rose markedly in 2020.

Nearly all older adults have experienced some form of ageism in their everyday lives. Older adults with more health concerns appear most likely to have experienced this kind of “everyday ageism," according to new findings published by a team from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, and U-M. The data, from a survey of more than 2,000 people between the ages of 50 and 80, come from the U-M National Poll on Healthy Aging.
In 2019, 1% of opioid prescriptions from dentists and surgeons were filled more than 30 days after writing, according to a new study led by Kao-Ping Chua, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics. While low, that percentage would translate to more than 260,000 opioid prescriptions per year if it generalized to all surgical and opioid prescriptions in the U.S.
